if you settle for a lesser remuneration then if you were to leave the company in future the pay which you will get will depend upon the one you used to get in your previous company.

I partially agree with you but position do matter, when you look for a better job you will be in a better position but there are certain industry norms for certain position. And the knowledge also matters, if you have the real stuff what the industry wants, you no need to worry about the salary...

I feel that "lesser" should be elaborated a bit more here, how much lesser 10-20-50 percent..? I can compromise upto 10% if required more i would try and search for a good company with a good profile and compensation.

There are various factors to be considered while deciding on this issue like the age of the person, the brand name of the company, easy availability of jobs in that line in future & how low is the offer as compared to existing salary. One has to keep in mind that my salary negotiation base is my existing salary. In case one has long working life left & the brand name of the next company is good; chance can be taken.

if a company is good , post is good and growth opportunities r ample, then definitely its advisable to go in for it despite a low pay package

Why not ! But the most important factor here is not even the pay package, it is the environment. Especially if you are a relative fresher to that particular industry or work domain, and you find the job as a good learning tool, then sure ! But you should also take care not to get bogged down for long. Either ask for a suitable pay hike when you realise that you are also contributing to the company or look for a better job with your valuable experience gained.

Yes if the opportunity to grow is better and designation/project or company is good then I would not mind to start at lower than my current package---after all even sprinters take one step back to surge/sprint ahead at blistering pace

I say Yes, but of course it varies from person to person..

if the person is coming from a small company and is really in hunting of Brand, he would definitely say YES.

as i am in the same situation now.. :)

currently i am on HUNT of brand and as well as good position, salary is negotiable..

I support your statement. It is always beneficial for a person in a long run to work in a company of repute in a less salary than otherway.

lower pay is ok but will it be worth taking into account the cost of intangibles like work culture etc. if the company is good, the environment is a happy one and the post is as per qualifications i guess i would opt for it. if one is capable, sooner or later it will be recognized and one need not worry too much about the future - it will resolve itself. imagine the opposite please. not so well known company, an environment not growth oriented - how long will you want to stay even if they paid you a shade better ? i'd go for lesser pay with greater number of smiles per day. follow your heart. regards
