Cellphone market growth slowed slightly in the September quarter due to worries over economic growth and component shortages, and the market growth would slow further in the current quarter, researchers said on Friday.

The smartphone market continued to surge in the quarter, with Apple's iPhone sales rising 91 per cent from a year ago, making it the No. 4 global handset vendor measured by volume. Sony Ericsson and Motorola, both benefited from their shift in focus to smartphones in the quarter. With all these development Do you think Normal cell phones are quickly loosing their market share people??

think yes, and going by the market trends, smartphones are the flavour of the day...earlier it used to be cheap handsets which had some basic facilities and these cell phones took care of all the basic things like communicating, texting, radio, games etc....and which cost in the range from 1000-3000 Rs. But today every other company are coming out with smart phones, basic handsets have gone out of the window and for just 3000, you'll get a smartphone from Micromax and several other companies which even people are also liking for that matter.  So, yes  Normal cell phones are quickly loosing their market share at the moment.

Future is Smartphones... if any better technology supersede it, that will rule. With the volume, prices are coming down, eventually it can kill normal cell phone market like Flat Panel LCD is killing normal CTV market. Remember CTV killed B & W  TV in the past..... Things like M-commerce is gaining popularity

Yes, the smart phones took over the market in the recent past as sunita rightly mentioned. one of the main factors behind the shift is aslo people trying to be trendy and it is most often than not a status issue for people to possess and maintain a well euipped mobile phone. and seeing the trend, there's no price for guessing the fact that, in the coming 2-3 years the normal phones will vanish from the market, unless the outsourced business partners from the overseas insist the employees here in India to have basic phones at office without multimedia to maintain and safeguard confidential customer data.
