Couple of years back not many corporate companies would have even given a thought to how Social Media can benefit them. Times do change, and we must learn from the changes in the web arena; and so Social Networking Sites have started attracting Brand Campaigns all over the globe. We are finding social networking sites a very useful and interactive medium for communicating with the youth, which is a key target segment especially for our touch-screen and multimedia phones. I think our engagement with youth through digital media is going to grow.

As a hardcore professional from the field of advertising, I feel its like mixing business with pleasure.

Advertising is  purely a commercial subject, where the impetus is to sell a product/service. mixing it with social media takes away from it & at the same time dilutes the beauty of those sites.

It may look good right now, but when people who visit these sites & interact, feel that they are bombarded with Commercial Advertisement... the resentment will start.

Commercial advertisements / offers & hardcore Sales oriented promotional material should stay away from these sites.

Yes it is working and for several reasons - people have less time and patience for offline media, and with increasing e-penetration, we are looking at an increasingly investigative and exploratory audience. The growing popularity of sharing platforms and social media portals is small evidence for the oncoming gale of a new media economy.

Yes of course SNS are great platform to enhance company's brand image or advertise new products or services. I think it works like word or mouth advertisement where information flows from one end to another.

We have a very good example of "Paranormal Activity" a film which costs less than $ 15000 however it went on to become one of the top grossing films in US BOX OFFCIE, amassing more than $ 7 million. It happens due to word of mouth review on SNS like Twitter/Facebook.

Yes,but right now its mostly urban people in their 20s & 30s  (or younger) who have the time and/or skills and are truly comfortable in using the net extensively especially social networking sites.

Any brand targeted at people aged 40 and above or at the rural/small town segments might not have very great success with online marketing today.

But ; in a few years the people in their 30s will get into their 40s and so on , plus PC penetration and internet access would have reached optimal levels even in rural areas (hopefully) ...and then we could say the internet is all pervasive.

Yes I feel that is the future . If you see these sites in particular :

1. Facebook

2. Linkedin

3. Twitter

4. Ecademy

They are totally world class with membership to boot of people which are the prime target group of Brand campaigns as this group consist mostly of people with disposable income who is going to Mostly use Branded products for their day to day needs.

So I see advertising in these four sites in particular taking a Quantum jump in near future.

I agree with you Mr. Surya, Social media sites are of great help for companies in terms of attracting customers, specifically youths. Since youths are very much curious to try new things, they are the target customers for companies and there can be no better way than social media sites. This is the reason more and more companies are taking the help of social media sites to run their business and it will evolve gradually...
