I think it would infact various sites are result of that. Take for an example hi5 this site was not known to people unless it came up with its unique style of aggressive marketing.

According to the information it was observed that Orkut is the most popular social media site. And it is the site which did not have any kind of marketing. So I think if the concept of a social media is great it does not require any kind of advertising.
