Earlier in Toostep people asked if “Rockmelt’s social media mojo can take on the browser giants?” Since the new browser jumped into beta the internet has been buzzing with mixed reviews of the new so-called “Facebook Browser.” Given that Google’s biggest competitive threat is arguably Facebook and that Rockmelt is built on Chromium, the real question is what sort of threat Rockmelt represents for Google? And is Rockmelt a threat to google's search engine??

Rockmelt, of course, is in beta, so we can expect a lot of refinement in the months to come, but it simply isn’t revolutionary enough. It doesn’t immerse one in the social web in the way that it needs to or that one might expect watching the company’s promotional videos. People aren’t going to stop Googling anytime soon either. Facebook search isn’t integrated with the browser. It’s one thing to use Facebook extensively, it’s another to let Facebook know everything you do, everywhere you go, and require you to log in to your Facebook account to allow it to capture all of these data. So, nothing rocket science according to me.

I think posting all the details on face book is not an good idea. Life of its own should remain private as I feel so

Rockmelt browser is mainly intended for accessing FaceBook social networking website. And not for other purposes. And moreover, there are many vulnerabilities in this version but still there are no frequent updates!

No, it is not a threat. It actually aids google. Google is one large advertising machinery which feeds on web requests. Any technology which increases web hits will increase revenue for google. Rockmelt is not the only such browsers, have a look at http://flock.com/. Flock is also based on chromium

Its hardly a threat, its based on same codebase as google chrome. What google has to do is simply integrate more features into chrome. Just recently they released extensions for integrating calender, docs and youtube to chrome.

It doesn't seem as a threat to me. It is based on the open source of Chrome and feels like it merely integrates some of the enhancements that are available to Chrome as well. being build on the open source of Chrome also means that they will benefit from upgrades on Chrome, but also that they will probably always be one small step behind.
