According to a new research, people use online social networks to express and communicate real personality, instead of an idealized virtual identity. It says that online social networking profiles convey rather accurate images of the profile owners, either because people aren’t trying to look good or because they are trying and failing to pull it off. These findings suggest that online social networks are not so much about providing positive spin for the profile owners, but are instead just another medium for engaging in genuine social interactions, much like the telephone.

Being able to express personality accurately contributes to the popularity of online social networks in two ways. First, it allows profile owners to let others know who they are and, in doing so, satisfies a basic need to be known by others. Second, it means that profile viewers feel they can trust the information they glean from online social network profiles, building their confidence in the system as a whole.

Do you also think social networking profiles captures true personality?

I think yes. It decides a person's personality. It asks for likings dislikings, hobbies, passions, favourite book, colour, movies etc all togetherly can give a very clear picture of what his mentality is and thus his personality can be decided...

There is no substitute for direct contact. Other forms are only fillers in absence of real contact. The body language and expressions of a person will speak a lot more than several webpages of assumed/projected identity.

However, the social media does provide a doorway to other people. How is it taken ahead depends on the networker.

Whether one will furnish details as what he/she is or one will try to portray an image about him/her self that what he/she wanna be.

Moreover, I think, one won't provide any information that what he/she don't wanna be.

So, I think in both the cases, whether the information is twisted or not, you might not know the exact character, but you can most probably judge the thought process & hence an overview of the personality.

Interactions at social networking sites do make a certain degree of impression on the personality of the participant but surely profile entered by the participant himself/herself may not portray appropriate his/her persona.
