Basically it depends on the person using those networking sites. If he/she want to gain knowledge then many good social networking sites are available on the other hand many sites are available which are only for time pass or for fun. So Basically social networking sites r vry usefull medium for updating knowledge for the people who actually want to update their knowledge. So it vary from person to person.

I think that networking sites are fun but knowledgeable also. Every networking site is not just for fun. as the Video provide by one person i agree that networking site is knowledgeable, I beleive that TooStep, Linkedin is just not for fun that is knowledgeable also, discussion on the blogs and getting information about some thing on paticlar topic is knowledgeable. And it depends upon person to person how he want to use the Networking site.

Similar to this TOOSTEP.com , social networking sites are to update knowledge but the main thing is that we get to meet the old friends with whom we may have lost contacts for several years. And joining new communies on these sites help us to interact with the people from different places but matching our attitude and personality. Also tell that majority of them are using these for fun also such as DATING & CHATTING. But i wanna say its to be in touch with your own people (family & friends).

As per my views, it depends on how you took the things. If you are professional and takes these sites for your help then I am sure it will benefit you. Else the persons who want to do fun, they can go for it on any site either professional or other.

Hi, If you take a close look at those few sites they are full of knowledge and information. People across the industry come and share theri views and experience. So its a kind of platform where experienced and freshers come together to exchange information and learn from each other. Sites like www.toostep.com is one of the great exaemple of that. Regards. Sanjay

It is both ways. But it is more knoledge update than fun. It is like two sides sword. How you use it depends upon you. Here the example I would like to give is of internet. What is the purpose of internet. To exchange knoledge the purpose for which it was invented or for seeing xxx or xxxx sites. The choice is yours. It is simple. How you take it.

I would agree that these sites help in Knowledge enhancement.. What i want to state is that it is on the way one looks at things... If one believes its fun, its fun or else if one looks it as knowledge enhancement...

I am only associated with TOOSTEP, so I can not say anything about other social sites. For TOOSTEP I can say that we get good information/ Knowledge from this site. Apart from this poems, discussions regarding different important topics, and the feelings expressed by the respected members for their parents are also making this site very useful. The second part can not be categorized as fun, but it is the actual presentation of our good social quality.

I think one could equate social sites with real life social interactions to a degree, such as a office mixer or party where people meet and sometimes establish very good business relationships with those whom they meet at such events. So one could argue "value" in social sites, so I think the real question is: Do social sites have value to my business? I think the answer is definitely yes. Good can come from social interaction, a lot of networking can be accomplished, bonds formed and to ignore social sites' impact on your website traffic would be a mistake; as popular as these sites are. Albeit they are probably a trend and most of them will likely dry up. But some are here to stay and they have serious traffic. Do we benefit from social sites that focus on knowledge exchange more? Absolutely.

Before narrating my views, I have gone through the views of the other Toostep members. While endorsing that social networking is for knowledge update, most of them have admitted that these sites are for fun , but some network like Toostep has enabled them to have knowledge updates. So I am perplexed and ambiguous about which way this argument should be supported. Ofcourse some of the social networking sites encourage their members to join groups with different topics being discussed/debated. So there is an opportunity to enhance the knowledge base by joining the group/subject in which one wishes to participate. There are some social networking sites which are for fun and most frequently visited by young and adoloscent members than the aged. In contrast these sites are visted by young as well as the aged in other places like UK & USA. This is obviously because of the cultural development is much advanced there than in our country. Toostep seems to be on the right track and many members seem to be anxious to hear their supporters as well as their critics on many interesting topics, and have satisfactory updates.

Social networking sites are for socializing on the net. Its virtual socializing. So its like any other socializing. We socialize for knowledge, fun, entertainment etc. That is all about it. When we socialize, we discuss all matters like knowledge sharing, helping each other, passing on information, politics etc. The only difference here is, since the group here is virtual and wide open audiance whom we havent even met, we need to follow more decorum and rules than we do in general socializing. Unfortunately we can't serve drinks on this type of socializing unlike our normal socializing!

Nice comments given by Mr.Deshpande, the foremost thing is,it depends how an individual uses. I personally feel, when one would like to update his/her knowledge then obviously would go for that.Despite the fact, to compete with this current Market and trend, one has to be acquainted with the Knowledge based sites more rather than fun based ones.

Put in another words , we need to see the indicators , for instance i am also enrolled into orkut , too step , linked in and facebook. Well in my case Orkut was beginning and for me its a typical get together chance with past buddies and get in touch with present ones. Linked in : I use it for Business and only for Business enquiries . So also toostep , but the difference i see in both is , toostep gives a more of brain storming chance and more over contacts to be made towards future. Latest poll of getting together in reality from a virtual community , is the indicator here to say people also search Futuristic contacts , through reading debates in different levels of perspective on same topic at the same time... this is what not many journals , infact in my opinion toostep is a Library where people can talk without sitting calm. :) Coming to facebook , i only used it twice. Well no big circle or no big get into that and see it to my eyes appeared ... also could be the geographical attachments in terms of concepts, thinking and needs one wants to concentrate upon. But at the same getting another toostep , another orkut , and so on ..wont help either while it still destroys other already firmed communities , where people are frequenting. Like Yahoo groups to MSN groups and then orkut groups diminished , another indicator is people like to maintain their own circle and not many like to be in a circle unless until they are admins , so here in individual maintainence each circle is a network of his/her own ..i feel its all psychological in that terms.. Well , i feel if its my choice i will stay in toostep as long as i keep finding good articles and debates as this one to speak and listen about ... Why do i care if other exists? As here only the matter of topic matters not the outlook or anything else. But still one thing ponders me : what does toostep get for doing all this for us ? as i also see no popups and advt? Please educate me in this..

Mr. Deshpande is absolutely right. It depends upon the factors you consider while using a social networking site. I believe the age of the user also plays an important role. While teenagers are more likely to use the sites for fun, a veteran would be more inclined towards informational aspects.

I support Dayanand’s important comments. This will be decided by members only. Members can encourage OR discourage the appropriate use, effectiveness and control of it. I too have seen many a sites/groups which are deviated far off from the initial ideas. The main reason is growth of participating member bases. As it is openly available for one-n-all to join and comment, its only other members who can decide either to encourage or discourage him/her. Exploitation of resources can be seen everywhere, but the ethically undocumented controls of discouraging such efforts only can stop this. The discouragements can be forced either by warning to such members or simply not replying to there issues/comments. This shall help a member to release that nobody is interested in his/her acts.
So simply act immune.

Though many social networking sites don't have specific purpose except to connect there are a new breed of corporate social networks that fill the gap to bridge between employee community to instantly share and communicate their thoughts which greatly simplifies life for many.

It depends on the members of such forums!! Though the idea behind such platforms would be to CONNECT, how the members connect is purely controlled by the members outlook on being on such platforms. The website might have the widgets, the tools and the software to make it an interactive knowledge based platform but the quality of sharing such would be entirely the members discretion! Its only on platforms like toostep.com that we are completely enclosed in an environment based on knoweledge and its sharing!! Thats my experience!

I don't think Social networking sites are there just for fun, there are many social networking sites like toostep and linkedin, which are exclusively used by professionals, to share their knowledge and to make business contact here, nowadays most of the business marketing happens on social networking sites, just because there they can find the relevant set of people for whom they can target, so i don't agree that social networking sites are just for fun it has more to do with knowledge sharing these days.....

I agree with your point as very few of these social networking sites are knowledge based, may of them are for fun and wasting of time by gosiiping , it depends how you choose your networking site and wot kinda people, and the control factor . Many time social networking site like Orkut has made to the headlines for bad reason and people misuse it . On the greener site you will meet people from different geographical region with different social ,educational, cultural background which leads to learning a lot of things, profesional knowledge sharing.

Hello Vishal, Good question. It is really tough to say whether it is for fun or knowlede.I can say most of the people use all such networking sites for fun.e.g. Orkut, facebook, Socialmotto etc. What actually peole do , they just chat , make friends etc. but it's all depend on the person how he/she is utilizing those sites. There are so many groups . One can join it and make a use of it.It would be really fruitfull but the sense of people is going down day by day.Just they are using it for Fun. As it is said that one can grasp illegal or useless thing very easily. So it is just similar with social networking sites.

The term social network explicitly implies that the place is to create network among social elements. Network obviously means communication. Now communication not necessarily be in terms of text. Communication can be graphics, video and audio. While you exchange message obviously in some way your knowledge enhances. Like your friend might have shared a video that you never watched before. While we communicate, while we open our senses, our knowledge enhances. But that always does not mean that, we do it purposedly. The idea behind any social networking site is to intermingle and have fun. It is not any knowledge sharing place. If you gain knowledge that's an additional benefit.

as per record and surevey from user, most social netwoork are here for friendship, fun and dating. Although the mission were strictly to serve a community, later on they become exploited in the name of getting more traffics.

Well to say that we have knowedge based debate on such sites is too early to say and disagreeable. Yes, You may get general sensible or practical views on the subject or debate. Also you may get to know likeminded views on such sites. But knowlegble update ? too early to say... Infact with so many debates everyday, knowledge on the subject remains aside, only views are generated.

Yes Most of the sites like facebook, orkut, hi5 and others which are there are just for fun, to get to know more people and just to have lame interaction where they are just chatting with others and trying to know others, and there is not much of use in these sites and the communities which are there are also of no use....so its more for fun rather than any kind of knowledge......
