With the release of the movie The Social Network this month, it is a good time to look at the impact of social networking sites on the Indian society. Here are some unique insights from the Experian service database, which tracks millions of search terms and lakhs of websites in India.

According to a survey conducted on November 20, social networks and forums account for 12.71% of all Indian Internet visits to websites in all categories, slightly declining from 13.25% share of visits in October, exceeding visits to portals and email services by a huge margin.

So, what do you think people, Are people using these social networking sites just to socialise or are they using it for both to socialise & business purposes??

Yes they are not just used for social purposes anymore, businesses have been integrated to the social media, interms of ads, groups, following, and for customer service. The most popular reason for people to follow brands on social networking sites is to find out about promotional offers and sales and not just making acquaintances and online buddies. The predominant aspect is using for social relationships. However, some times business also enters the realm. In my opinion it is 95% for social connectedness.

Recently I got a call from a NGO calling and asking -How much I would pay up? On asking how did she get my no., I was told that I should better attribute it to one of the social networking sites. So the point is become social and then pay up. What would one term it? Charity or business?

Social sites have now become a database for millions of potential customers. Businesses both big and small have come to realise this fact and are making the most of it. Hundreds of mails inducing you to buy a multitude of items cram our inbox and whether we like it or not we have to accept the fact that this phenomenon has come to stay. Of course, both. If that's not true, than most corporate giants have absolutely no idea what they are pumping billions into. Any decent company in it's own right and a competitive marketing team is on Facebook, trying to get people to do business on their Facebook pages. Hell, there were special Thanksgiving discounts for people on Facebook. People shouldn't even be debating about this. This is common knowledge.

Yes networking in any way is a way of growing your contacts. I think how we use it is entirely upto us. In most cases however business related agenda is most potent in driving the need for networking.
