The recent decision of the Gujarat Government to install solar panels over the Narmada canal to obtain the twin benefit of generating power and to reduce the evaporation loss should be implemented across India over all the irrigation canal projects.

One of the main arguments against solar power is the space required for the installation of panels. Installing them over the water will reduce the requirement of space. Further, if the panels are manufactured using thin film PV films instead of conventional flat panels, these can be installed over curved dome shaped structures, improving the asthetics and also increasing the area.
