No. As of today, no solar technology can compete with the pricing of traditional methods of power production. The pricing fluctuates between 12-20cents/KWh whereas traditional methods are between 7-11 cents/KWh. Until solar technology can compete with pricing it is difficult make it main stream. New technologies like Cadmium Telluride solar cells and hybrid Concentrated Solar power are promising. But they have to be demonstrated commercially. Besides, it is a myth that India has ample amount of sunlight for solar power. Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat are the only places in India where we get ample sunlight and land to implement large scale solar projects. Plans are afoot to implement a 5GW solar project in Rann of Kach.
