Microsoft has newer technology and some great programs to offer. There is more flexibility and you can use any other programs with it. I think the new versions of sql server will suceed and become the favorite.

I've found that SQL Server is much better at getting up and running and
building apps quickly. Oracle is just too complicated for normal people
to be able to pick up a book and a CD and start coding within any
reasonable time.

ORACLE is the unparalleled RDBMS known for its robustness and stability in comparison to any other RDBMSs known. SQL Server has several short-comings, may be good in Microsoft platform, a lot of gaps if run in other platforms!

MS SQL Server has its origin from another database product called Sybase. Sybase was popular once upon a time. It is difficult to compare Oracle and SQL Server, Oracle is way ahead in terms of features and its design. MS SQL Server is the best provided you use it with MS products like asp.net, c# etc. Also, if you are new to databases, I think MS SQL Server is easier to understand (i could be wrong). Anyway, Oracle is still the king among database products.

Darpan you are absolutely right that oracle is much better than SQL server and just to add on to what you said, below are the advantages that oracle has:
- Oracle 9i Database supports all known platforms, not only the Windows-based platforms.
- PL/SQL is more powerful language than T-SQL.
- More fine-tuning to the configuration can be done via start-up parameters.

Mamta I dont know where you find this.. how ever just to state that sql server is a ok tool if you have low budget and low data if your data size is big then using sql server can be a big pain.
Lot's and lots of cons with ms-sql server .. however oracle rocks :) eg.
In sql server --cant use Arrays
In Sql Server cant use dynamic queries with functions
In Sql server cant call sp from a function

Oracle is Oracle SQL Sever is SQL Server it all depends on what you are trying to achieve if you are programming the application using Microsoft technologies (OS and App) then SQL Server is the best as it provides m uch better integration with the application but if you are coding on the other technologies then Oracle is the best. I find sql server more complicated as there is a lot of supporting technologies embedded, and integrated with a lot of related components. so at any point of time i would prefer Oracle as a database;
