The Bureau of Efficiency ought to be commended for improving the Quality of many of our house hold appliances at least in terms of energy consumption. Should this Star Rating be mandatory for power plant equipment also. Poor Quality equipment should be penalised while High Qulaity Equipment should be given tax benefits. Any comments?

Yes Mr. Chandrashekar you are right here, not only for products which uses electricity should be given star rating for less consumption of power, but also equipments which are used in manufacturing power should also be given star ratings which will improve the whole process, so star rating for the power plant should be made mandatory..thanks for raising the question.

For improving the quality of life and sustainable development .... Yes, it was long overdue and even now, if BEE takes adequate, prompt and decisive action; things can go a long way to standardize and systemize the smart models of design, use, operation, maintenance and consumption patterns of our Power and ancilliary equipments ...

Energy auditors must be asked to do audits of these equipments and take appropriate measures / actions, but the process is painfully slow and I am wary of our beurocrats and technocrats as they lack collective wisdom,  courage of conviction and joint action

Here is one point where there can be no opposition even if one wants to. I have provided some services to an electrical equipment company and liaised between them and the KPTCL. The inside story is interesting on the one hand and a fit case for reforms on the other. Perhaps, we should rate everyone - individuals and organisations - through the means of star rating. My hunch is that we will end up providing negative ratings in most cases!!

It is correct & required that not only the items which derives electricity- be given Star rating for low consumption of power but also the machineries which are used in production of electricity and transmission from one place to other also should be rated in the same manner. Because in the transmission line products like Transformer, Conductor, Cable & Switch gears(in substation yard) are used and if their components are not of quality than in split the power loss would be observed and is a great loss. Similarly in the power generation stations if such items are not ranked than also the loss which in turn boosts to countries economic loss.

Thank you Mr. Vineet for raising a very significant question....

If India has to become a economic superpower, we need to focus on Quality. "Cheap" quality will help us see through the day, but "High" quality will benefit us for generations.

It is great to have star rating on power plant equipments and I completely agree on it. But I am just looking at it from another perspective. Star rating comes at a high price and could not be affordable at all times. Countries like India which are not very rich in terms of national income, may not be able to afford such rating on all power plant equipments. This would lead to closing of these power plants and thereby it could lead to a big loss. So I would conclude by saying that star rating of power plant equipments may be important, but not mandatory
