It is just a source of communication, nothing else. Why do we need more than that, I am having a mobile in which sms memory is unlimited and Mp3 is also there, so I am planning to use it for whole life. Why do we need touch screen facility in mobile, it just a complication, nothing else!!!!!

We are not saying to stop the innovations and improvements. But we want a good difference between old and new versions. They need to be game changer king of improvements. Changing the basic features and look can't be called any innovations. When you are changing from 3.2 mega pixel camera to 8-12 MP camera with added new features to capture picture with high quality and low in size, this is called innovation. Just adding a new 12 MP camera can't be called innovations. Idea is to have gap and remarkable improvement over products over a period of time will be better for manufacturers and consumers/customers.

I agree with this argument. Mobile phones should minimize inventing and re-inventing also copying features from one another. I do not see any kind of strong USP(Unique Selling Point) now a days in any latest mobiles. Its better if the focus is more on key functional requirements, increase voice quality(with noise reduction), application performance, faster UI updates, data accessibility etc.

I am All for it!According to a recent research people get angry and frustrated by the complexity of modern mobile phones. We, experience designers, are stupid… We’ve got the greatest job in the world, full of endless possibilities to make people’s lives better, easier and happier. And we still manage to only make things worse. Read More...

I agree that we need a spectrum of phones ranging from the "just talk and call" type of phone to the high gizmo web/internet enabled with all the various options of facebook, twitter, yahoo, , google, linkedin, etc incorporated. But I think it is time we deserve a bit of respite from all the deluge of smart phones entering the market. The marketeers should try and hold back and really put in time to develop a good phone, as these phones cost a bundle an then give out one which would really be useful to users ...

This is important for the mobile manufacturer to have enough gap/break between two model and number of new features before launching in the market. This will help the buyers to get the right hand set after proper analysis of its feature and also help manufacturer to get the possible good return of investment made. There are number of modile handset are launched, relaunched after simply making few changes in look, OS features and attracts new buyers. Many times such new features are even fooling the customers. The kind of tough compitions in the market is tending each of them to seize the new customer for their products whiout proper application and handset testing. The result, end users suffers. Samsung Omnia is an example of this error. When there are too many options, you go by Seller/Friends advice and many times end up buying something not required/optimum for your usage. So the society needs a pause in the new brands/series of mobile handsets.

The debate is good and fence should be clear. This indicates whether, the single phone should support multiple OS. Yes obvious, there are phones which are customized and designed for the OS. This should not happen. Like in out computer OS, The single hardware will support multiple OS. This also to be in mobile computing. I raise my hands for the same. I too support the technological advancement in mobiles. But, wish the competition be healthy. -Yuva(http://Yuvahere.com)

Good debate sonal, I really like the quote from Joaxie wexler there, yes there is too much of activity in mobile phones, as every day some new phone will be released, and people are unable to know what is the difference between different OS that are out there like from Droid to Android, and telecom network providers are finding it difficult to match the pace from Mobile phone makers, as Infrastructure is not ready at the moment, so companies now should focus on something else apart of OS on Mobile phones, like increasing its features, interms of mobile phones going green than anything else...

If I am seeing AOL Logos broadcasted on this site and other sites and places, and seeing how they did practically owned the Internet(even though it was Dial Up) for several years they are still in business and competing well, how I have yet to know figure out 100%, after Dial Up,Broad Band,Cable,T-1 and above and now Wireless Internet, and now all the new cell phones, brands and cell companies that seem to pop up a daily...... then I think it is more then possible for other companies to keep up just as AOL has. They may have to invest in some new strategies, hire more people or a person that is educated in helping companies learn, educate and compete well in the Technological world that we have all helped maintain and get strong and it only grows stronger every 12 to 24 hours. Its all about who can produce, grow, and be open to and be willing to make better all the new and upcoming possibilities in every industry there is, its 2010 people stop making excuses and start making a difference!

Chaos has entered into everything, but rather than fearing from chaos and preventing innovation into mobile tech, it's better to improve the technology of managing chaos.

Let us remeber the findings of Darwin and what he established : Survival of the fittest. Today's man ( yes women also) is the endresult of constant innovation and up-gradition. May we deny to upgrade ? If atall we propose " no more phones " who is going to listen ? Is there any world body to oversee such things ? No. So we are to embrace the new. Have a new set with new OS and technology as and when required and possible. Further, changes are every where : Automoble, fashion, watch, electronics etc. etc. As cell phones are more and more intregal to our daily life, we are more concerned about this small machine in our hands. Nothing 2be worried for .. new is welcome and may not stopped.

I agree with hemant, passing law is impractical. And he has highlighted an interesting point, every product has its own life cycle so a end will come. There is no need to stop the invention.

Well, the good thing about a market economy is if there is chaos in network owing to a glut in supply, order will be set by lowered demand. There should be no curbs on innovation as long as environmental standards are met.

Instead of stopping the innovation, the innovations should be focussed in fiends like education. Mobile technology has bridged the gap in many ways. remember the days when we used to have a phone with a round dial, it was not long ago. When i was young, the entire community had 1 such phone and we used to refer the call as PP call. Today the innovation has given the opportunity to bridge the gap that existing not too long ago. I just hope that Mobile Communication Industry starts to think outside the box, stop inventing just another mobile phone and start focusing on what they could add as a value to the community with make it more affordable.

many say halt technology - too many cellphones, too many weapons - and as one who should be the first to agree i will sat please keep going with the technology and innovation for through the discovery of the principles of physics, dynamics etc we are really discovering the inner working of the human body and mind - technology is not about comuters and efficiency - it is about sefl discovery

Invention is the driver of civilization. There may be n no of mobile phones with different capabilities, but the invention of a new one will always bring out a new technology. A recent study showed that e-mails may soon be history as new types of communication is coming into play. The infrastructure if unavailable will catch up with upswing of demand. But stopping invention will lead to a death of mobile phones or further developed form of communication in the future.

The point of debate for yes is valid. But, there have been such problems where some tools were invented and there was no proper hardware or whatever reqd for that. But this doesn't mean that the dependant field should not go ahead with the production.

Let me put another perspective here, apart from the technical ones debated. We know that not all product launches are successful, all other smartphones launched in the line of iphone or blackberry are yet to see the same success as these two. I think i will not be wrong in saying that in a few years we will see a lot of new phones being launched and lot of them dying also, this is a natural phenomenon true for any technology industry. Considering this it seems that to stopp the manufacturing and development of new and better phones is not something which is desirable. Market forces will ensure that user friendly and network friendly phones will survive and rest can be remebered as history.

Infrastructure will catch up. OS will hardly be an issue in the time to come and telcom managers will devise better apps to support the OS and the user. The question is : IS IT ESSENTIAL or NECESSARY? How much is ENOUGH? Thamks for the referral Sonal :)

I am not saying no, for the sake of saying. Since I too m not a mobile geek and wuld like to stick to simple mobile with basic requirements, my theory is that science drives us to bring abt the best in humans. Technologically how much a human mind can stretch is one of the intriguing thing, hence let the mobiles come in the market with different attributes. Eventually only those ppl who enjoy these features will buy them. As for simple ppl like us we shld not get distracted by new models and concentrate only wht one needs. This way it leaves nothing to argue or feel perturbed about. and who knows in the near future it will be the only way of accessibility sans paper, god forbid!

stop inventing mobile phones, why?well I am not in favour of it,technology is advancing day by day,and why only mobile phones take a breather when competition in every field is on its extreme level, inventing new mobile phones is a technology advancement and advancement is for betterment and it only gives a tough competition to other competitors and if we talk about prevent mobile inventing, then prevent computers inventing, prevent new technology advancement why is it so?

How do you propose that "one stop inventing mobile phones"? By passing a law? I think it is impractical to talk about stopping invention in any sphere - it is something that will always continue. What we probably need is more and better standards and more effective enforcement of standardization programs, compliance etc. Every product in every industry has a life-cycle and in its initial stages, there is always a lot of confusion in the marketplace. It is only when there is some kind of stability and standardization that you start seeing a more structured and orderly market, with users who are confident that they know what they want and that they know how to get it and make it work for them. Technology tends to be disruptive and we are seeing that characteristic magnified many times over in the mobile space.
