The government in India has mandated that starting 2011, all vehicles (cars, trucks and motorcycles) will have to display a tag that shows the vehicle's fuel efficiency. According to the Ministry, 15-20% of CO2 is provided by vehicles on the road. Manufacturers will need to clear the emission effect form the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Do you think this process of controlling pollution will work?

It will work.

But our standards for rating vehicles on driving cycles is really bad. The driving cycles our cars and bikes are tested are at present are more like favoring the vehicles rather than the users. For example the Diesel Ritz is rated at 21 kmpl but i dont think any one will be able to get more than 18kmpl. Under heavy traffic one could get about 16kmpl at the best.

The down side of such a rating procedure is that manufacturers will start to tune the vehicles to show high sticker mileage but we might actually see a drop in efficiency on real road usage. Finally consumers will still remain fools and we will not save any fuel or reduce any pollution.

I agree that this is a step in the right direction.

Most household appliances , such as refrigerators , air-conditioners already have such BEE star ratings , and discerning buyers would do well to look at these before they buy.

My only caveat would be that unlike in household appliances , in the case of vehicles , their fuel efficiency is also dependent on how well they are maintained. Thus , when they are manufactured , they may have a certain rating , but depending on whether they are maintained properly or not , this rating can get degraded. How will we know the on-road condition of these vehicles , even a few years after they have been in use ?

The renewal of their rating , by their owner , must also be made mandatory , every two years or so.

I think this make better awarness between the people for saving energy at all forms.Even every single person in our country can be made understand about the energy efficiency

This is a very good step taken by the government. This process will keep the amount of pollution a vehicle does which will make the driver and the traffic police aware of the pollution done by the vehicle and in this way, definitely pollution can be controlled to a lot extent.

It may do the opposite also, since vehicles which are more fuel efficient will be sold for more, and many can't pay for them, so they'll go for vehicles that pollute more, since they'll be cheaper. In that case, I don't think controlling pollution will be easy...
