TCS which is India’s largest software services provider will be deciding who will fit into CEO S Ramadorai’s shoes after he retires in october. It had to be the current COO Mr. N. Chandrashekar, but then it is not a simple task ahead for TCS. So much so that TCS is actually looking at two or more people for the role.

In TCS right now there is an organisation transition to a new CEO currently underway at TCS.  But then this multiple employees in senior positions and  multiple power-sharing formula was being discussed within the organisation, and it has only intensified in the last month or so, as TCS prepares to welcome on board its new CEO next month.

The reason behind such a move is due to reasons like, as TCS is now a $6-billion entity with a headcount of 1.4 lakh, with a huge management bandwidth will be required to carry out functions across different verticals, geographies and service lines. Secondly, a single person in top position had too many people reporting into him, which may not be the case going forward. COO duties will be divided up among multiple executives. IT companies are increasingly trying to split duties among various levels in the company.

So what do you think people will this multiple power sharing structure help organizations?

I think this is a good move and a company which is  as huge as TCS, it has its processes all over the world and a single person handling these things would be difficult and power sharing also gives less headache interms of how to handle all the things and with the work shared by some more it will be less burden and one can take care of specific areas and businesses and give more time towards it than scattering very little time for all the other things. This has also been tried by several other companies like Wipro and Cognizant, when their respective CEO's left.

I think there cannot be multiple people. A CEO is a CEO. He is a person with high caliber and he will definitely be able to handle it.

I dont want it to be " Too many cooks spoil the broath".

I also believe this is a good step taken. This will not only simplify the workload but also will do multiple works at a less time...

Yes Gargi I am absolutely agree with you if any organisation becomes too big then it's better to have multiple people for a particular portfolio.

In the past so many company has done the same thing and achieve very good result so I don't think why TCS can't do?

It will provide more focus and growth towards particular region. Yes one thing is there, TCS has to outgo some extra cash.

yes by all means ! It would mean that each of the CEO will have more time to himself to do more thinking and stretegic planning . It would benefit the organisation immensely in the long run .

However problem would arise if the clarity of scope of duties and proper demarcation of authority is not done . In this case TCS will be in News for all wrong reasons!

I agree with you that the CEO is a CEO. The responcibility of him is much more in the company and if we give him multi task the he can not justify to his work and it may lead to the company close also.

"TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH"!! - a very popular saying.

I am not against the multiple people for a single rask program, but I am not sure of its viability. We are talking aboutthe podition of a CEO. An all important position which reads CAPTAIN of the ship. Even when you ride an aircraft there is only one PILOT and the other Co-Pilot. One NAVIGATES the bird, the other helps in the navigation process.

Similarly a CEO has ED, Sr VP's to help him navigate his dhip, why are we thinking of adding an extra hand at the helm?? People who reach that status in professional careers have a way of doing things and they have reached there because of their skills, intelligentsia and experience!! Are we doubting that? Also, I feel that we are giving rise to CONFLICTS in opinion here!! There will be doubts that will be raised on a strategy of one by the other. Knowing mentality groupism would be the next hazard!!

Leave the CEO alone and watch your sjip sail to gloru or disaster!! Let one man be responsible for all the actions!! Were there two Presidents in a country??? Its a hell of aj job to run a country so why not two instead of one!! every action requires a VALIDATION. I do not see that happening if there are two people at the helm. Its a classic case of playing the nalme game and a lot of finger pointing!!

Thanks for the referral Gargi!! But this is my view!

CEO is a CEO

If there is a power sharing or rather Lets put it as Responsibility and authority sharing anong senior executives ,then again these top executive also need to report to a CEO!

Otherwise conflicts do arise and may not be healthy for high performance of the organisation. it will also lead to high attrition rates

The Multiple power sharing is suitable for few types of businesses wherin profit centers grow parallelly
