We see more and more evaluations by Auto mags. I have observed that these mags are playing favourism depending on the ad revenue they are getting from a manufacturer or directly getting bribed.

I invite the members to formulate a technical evaluation process to be offered to public, that works by giving inputs such as torque @ rpm, bhp @ rpm, Bhp per ton, wheel base, kerb weight, pay load, etc.

The Tech. Evaluation is a calculation that is excersized by customer them selves will justify the purchase, rather than being influenced by vested judgements by Auto mags.

Hi kameswara, I don't think people will be interested to evaluate it technically and then buy the car and also many may not have the technical knowledge of cars. So the magazines are doing it in a better way and people are more attracted towards it. And also the manufactures will not be comfortable with this concept since it may incur loss to them.

:)

Mr Jinesh, Lecturer sir, You have put so many tech. terms. How come ? because you have gained knowledge of these terms as you have read those mags or books. Dont you think thousands of people gothrouh the same books and mags. Pls refer hard copies or e-brocures of cars world wide.

Hai Puneet, the mags are taking advantage of the not technical, general and innocent public. You will understand when you grow-up further.

Hi Mrudula, Thank you for participation. You are a Product development manager. If some one asks for comparision of your product, will you simply say it's the best product and the person will agree for what you say. Dont you need to support your statment with quantified superiority or inferiority of your product ? Pls respond for the sake of friendly debate.

Interesting topic.

Well its true that most magz are now giving favoured reviews.

I think a good way to help potential customers evaluvate cars is by :

1. give them a list of options available in the category they are interested in.

2. help them compare the different specs and tell briefly what each means.

In a way they relate to it, while driving.

3. Past user feedback of all the different cars.

4. It would fantastic if a delear has say four or more type of cars of a particular category. Say for example, i want to buy a hunch back small car...

There is a dealer in town who has hyundai, maruti, fiat etc. There i will be able compare DIRECTLY....and thats the best way a decision can be taken according the person's interest.

Though i think it would harm certain companies (cos of poor products)... eventually, the fact is... every customer does sum comparing ALWAYS... if the dealer provides him with those... he can take the advantage in his own ways...

I firmly believe technical evaluation can be an authentic assessment when compared to review by Auto Mags - at least in India. It is common perception that media coverage is usually slanted...

The catch of course is that the individuals making the technical evaluation need to be neutral - and to find such people who can maintain integrity may not be that easy. After all, the Auto Mags also did not start off with bias - they only got swayed enroute!

While such evaluations are not the trend now for the individual car buyer NOW, I definitely feel that they will be more the habit int he future.

So far there werefew really "GOOD" cars that felt good to drive - seat of the pants assessment. Now a days with standardization and norms, many cars are coming in to the same category. So people need a reason to select a particular model.

Discussions about engine capacity, torque, power, pick up, milage and all have become the norm at the lunch table.

I surely don't think the technical evaluation is a matter for customers that are unaware of the technical terms. During purchasing a car, most of the peoples go for the ride quality and comforts. Then comes the safety, power and other items. Most of the magazines are taking care of this section for the customer. I always keep up with them and found no problem in their 'inside customer's shoe' evaluation method. Although the technical evaluation is helpful for better purchasing it will be a hard job to make one understand what the torque really means and what is oversteer, understeer and like wise how the new technologies work etc. So let us leave the magazines to do their work and start a new path of evaluation method for the customer in terms of technical side too.

For someone not having in-depth understanding magazines may still be helpful.

They take sides is no secret.
