in my quest to seek help for mankind like millions of others around the globe, I was pondering a question of my own. Could technology be a killer?

i think technology can be a killer if not controlled, and more resources spent into using less resources to provide same services, advancing technology into the green system. I spend days looking at IT rooms packed with the most energy non efficient gear at data centers around the globe, and wonder how much energy to we power with each PC, cell phone or even router/switch is wasted each minute of the day, world wide.

I think the green PC is the way to resolve allot of issues. Cut down the use of power and the need for massive fuel usages and costs, and maybe, just maybe, we can give our children a chance.

Priyanka, you are so true. Change is eternal truth of life. Technology is big driver of this change. Industrialization changed the we do business, airplanes changed the we  travel, internet and mobile changed the way we communicate.  All this innovations  made our life  so much more better. Technology puts these change driver in hands of human being. If we don't try and influence the change through technology, nature will anyway changes things for us through its own way (floods, earth quakes, Tsunamis etc.). If that is not enough, something might drop from space to bring this change. Remember Dinosaurs !! They were not technologically advanced, but a meteor killed them all and changed the face of earth completely to allow humans to dominate the earth.  So  instead of waiting  for changes to  come to us , lets try to change things ourselves through technology invention and innovation.

As the recent crisis is one type of killer source. According to me Technology is the "SLOW POISON"

we can prevent it by using positive sides of technologies. Presently, How to destroy the technological invention is first invented, before whatever the new invention is done. I mean to say that every one think about destroying instead of creating. creater or inventor or manufacturer only think about their profit. they think why should we care, Just manufactured item and earn profit. But every one should think about nature. Verymuch pollutive waste is produce by the same.

Also as the education is increasing use of Technology is increased. it is directly proportional. so ultimately Use of sources to create product is increasing. As the technology is increased then every one wants to use it more and more. Suppose if invention will be closed then technology might not be a killer or it will stopeed for a some time. But it is not possible to stop invention. Last but not least there is a group of human being in the world, who always worry about this thing.

The co-founder of Sun Microsystems, Bill Joy has, in recent years, turned his attention to the biggest questions facing humanity: Where are we going? What could go wrong? What's the next great thing?

Joy saw a way forward that, frankly, frightened him. He saw a very plausible future in which our own creations supplanted us -- if not out and out killed us

Yes Ted

I strongly support u in this matter. Now a days we r more and more depending on the technology. See can u imagine a day with out sophisticated facilities.  U can not survive a single minute without depending on the technology, .....     so much dependency....   really   a slow poison , BIT.. BY... BIT.

Rajdeep that's very diplomatic answer but Technology makes life more complicated. I agree that Technology is necessary & what it has done but not always a positive influence in modern life. If it is backfiring then definitely we should think twice on it as our next generation rely on us.
And because of technology only people are having malign thoughts which can lead towards mass destruction easily. 200 years ago, do you imagine that the country was filled with overworked people who had extremely high demands and expectations placed on them? No they knew how to relax, that life was more than work. How are our lives any easier because of technology? It is making things worse...

I agree with Allan, Ted, Bill, & Robert.... Most of the technology development has happened to kill humans. Either technology development has happened during wartime or in preparation of war. Most of new technologies come from defense department

I absolutely 100% agree. WE need to start thinking in terms of what are we leaving behind for the next generation to deal with and start acting accordingly. It can't go on just being about the bottom line and what's in it for me. If we don't change the way things are done this world will not support us for much longer. The technology is already here in most cases, we just have to be proactive in making it happen.

God made man. That's the generally accepted truth. But the philosophical twist is MAN MADE GOD. The same set of argument and counter-argument can be constructed for technology too. Man made technology. But can the reverse happen here: i.e. TECHNOLOGY UNMADE MAN? I think not. It is the Man who is constantly evolving newer technologies. Technology is not making newer men and women. Man IS the master of this universe. Not technology. Because Man controls technology. The reverse has not been found to be true. Not so far at least.

Technology is a double edged sword. It can be used for good as well as bad effects in society. The only constant in this world is change and so any change that is brought by technology is inevitable. Whats the order of the day is for the technologists to have a societal consciousness and ensure that technology is a life saver and not a killer.

Technology cannot be a killer in any sense, though it has got its own drawbacks, but do we care.Every human desires comfort and it has been only due to new technological innovations.Just imagine had there been no advancement in medical technology, could we fight against life threatening diseases like cancer, hepatitis, etc.

Merely technology is not a killer. Present scenario is that the technology re-engineered our regular life, business and daily activities. Sitting in our living room we do ordering pizza, reading articles, using toostep.com, buying products online these activities proves that human life has been enhanced by technology. In absence of mobile phone or computer or credit card or ATM we get struck in between our daily activities. One should use the technology in an efficient way.

I do not believe that Technology is a killer until and unless if it is not used for any melafied intention. Now a days so many new technologies are coming to help a normal person to live happy life and also same time new technology helps to grow people more.

I STRONGLY beleive that technology aint a killer..unless its misused! Well that holds true with ANY POSSIBLE 'good' thing around. Its a persons discretion as to how he/she takes it. But overall, technology has changed the way we used to live, I wud say even 10 years ago! Now we dont feel lonely while travelling alone coz we have our Ipods, we dont get bored coz we have Gaming consoles, we dont have to visit bank to withdraw/deposit money, we dont have to queue in Railway station to buy tickets, we dont have to py extra commission to Middlemen for buying Airtickets, we can watch a cricket match LIVE in our living room in all our comfort....and the list goes on and on! Thanks to the Technology!!!

No technology is not a killer, but the people behind it are. Imagine the world without the internet, phones, music ipods, mobiles, gadgets. How you use technology is important and to know when to stop. It is appalling that those who misuse technology are never punished, not even caught. Also, it is shocking to read that technology is used as a weapon of mass destruction.

See I wouldn't call Technology a Killer. I read what others had to say. Funnily I agree to all of them.Taking a philosophical look into it, I'm sure you have heard about this age old saying "Too much is too bad"?

It should be perceived as to what we want the technology to do for us, If we want it to kill us, it will for sure andit can be used to save our lives.

On an emotional point, I lost my father because of Cancer and there was no sound technology which could help him heal at that time. But now we do have technology which can heal or atleast arrest the cancer at keep the person alive. This might be just one example, If we simply agree that Technology is a killer then I'd say we are absolutely wrong.

Who develops this technology? Human being, isnt't it? So good or bad,its not the technology but its the mind which creates it.

Adarsh it was not diplomatic that is the truth and omkar has also rightly mentioned. It was my personal view that technology is almost wholly beneficial.  Of course it is misused for anti-social and sometimes evil ends. There are the inevitable mistakes along the way but these should not deter us from seeking to develop and exploit technology to improve the human condition. Technology gives us choices which we didn’t have before. That's what is my point ....

Great debate guys !!! I feel Technology is just like the guy in a relationship. The bad things about it are always noticed, whereas the good go unnoticed. When it is noticed, it is but fleeting. But the bad, alas, those are the ones that stick in people's heads. I for one think that the future is bright for our kids where technology is concerned. Good point Priyanka & Rajdeep...

Alan, The way you use technology can be a boon or a curse. If one use of technology seems a curse to us, for someone out there it can be a boon. One has to stay with it & can just put proper mechanism to control it but on the whole, technology has been a boon for almost as long as we've existed.  Let me ask a simple question to everyone out here: can you imagine going back to a mode of existence before technology? Before we even had clothes, or spears? Before fire and language? All of these things were inventions, and if you can't imagine even living without what we have now (much less comfortably though), then you'll have to agree that technology is too valuable to ever give up.....

technalogy and Science in itself can be a very good thing. There are BIG problems though. Like the way we handle our discoveries and knowledge. We often try to run before we can walk. i.e. we identify benefits and uses of a new discovery and implement them before we fully understand or are even aware of the implications. For example DDT, Thalidomide, Nuclear waste and bombs etc.

Also, most of our knowledge of scienceand technalogy  has only been around for a relatively very short time. The benefits we have gained, have come all too quickly and allowed our numbers to grow at an astounding rate. Our presence in large numbers has made quite an impact on life on Earth. As I understand it, it has been estimated that since 1970, approximately 30% of biodiversity has been lost. Partly, if not largely, due to the effects of mankind.

I see ethical issues involved with our rate of benefits. Let's take medicine as one example-

Would you deny you son, daughter or other loved one, LIFE SAVING treatment?
Of course not!

What if it meant a few animals suffered a little discomfort?
Probably still no question, it means saving a loved one.

How about if it meant some animals actually die?
You may still go ahead but feel a little uncomfortable.

Now, what if it meant a complete species became extinct? Or MANY species?
Hmmm...

As I look a the big picture, this is what I see happening. OK, saving ones life does not directly relate to extinction of species. But in effect, trying to cure all ills and saving every human life you can, is ONE FACTION that has led to our boom in numbers. Thus the impact on biodiversity.

I am IN NO WAY saying we should refrain from using medical facilities. I am merely trying to point out that we have gained so much benefit through  technalogy  knowledge, in such a small time, it has had an effect on all life.

So if science had progressed very slowly, or we had dealt with the knowledge more carefully, then it would not have had such a negative effect. We have certainly had much benefit from science and it may even save the 'entire planet' one day.

Alan, you are right that its double edged sword. The point is to measure the pros versus cons of a particular technology. In most  of the cases pros heavily weigh against cons. And we are ingenious enough to find solutions to cons subsequently. Good argument Priyanka!!

Good Debate Guys !! Most of the time when there is a technology innovation, we get overwhelmed with the value that the technology can create. We forget that the same technology will also destroy some value, till starting seeing it happen. I think every technology solves some problems and create some new one. I wouldn't go as far as to say "Technology is killer".  I think every technology while solves problem, will also create some new problem. This is a fact that we have live with and accept it.  I think the solution to this debate lies in continuing to  invent new technology and at the same time identify very early the possible problems this new technology can create and start work on finding solutions to them.
