appraisals and assessments have come a long way. for various reasons, including the purely statistical, numerical ratings are ‘in’. we have reached a stage where human behavior and performance can be expressed and understood as numbers. and if indeed language is numerical in these fields, does an “average” employee exist ? i feel that the "average" employee does ewxist. may we debate the issue – an “average” employee exists, or he doesn’t.

Sunil good debate , today most of the employees doesn't exists. Earlier by seeing the performance of an employee and by his characteristic he was give appraisal  and other things..... But today for everything the is a measurement scale and it shows the exact contribution of an employee....

So many employee they don't exist !!!

Average employee do exist and will in future. But average in what? and it depends on the organisation to identify this trait and utilise his skills in the right areas where he can excell. Identification is a process and there are instances where an average employee have excelled by proper mentoring, change of job roles, creating the sense of belongingness and bringing the sense of pride in their work.

yaah , average employees do exist, now a days "What Gets Measured Gets Done" policy is being deployed in most of the companies, but it doesn't means that an ave employee wont get his position.. an ave employee , might not be very competitive, but have some of various qualities, and capabilities, for eg. they can perform very limitedely/ slowly but are able to do that much of job with a touch of perfection..so i think they do exist and they will in future,, as some where we need such employees ..

average employee do exist because no one is perfect and moreover one should be always putting in effort to improve rather than cribbing for incompetence. more imporant is to try.

yes they do...but it is very difficult to document the reasons behind them...reasons may vary from standard corporate problems to own personal reasons...it would be better if any existing corporatively-bullying employer goes other way round his method of emplyoeeing , then this average employee might turn into the new confident emloyee

The average employee exists merely because of the preference of such people. Performance is driven by the self motivation of the employee and people who tend to remain in the average category are classified in the category due to the difference in drive or interest in getting it done. Of course there is a bell curve philosophy used by most companies to put people in different levels, but there is no concept of average in reality.

i am not professional, unlike many here..but i m here to support to the fact the employees do exists, n indeed dr r many factors which support this concept. initially it was just a simply assessment tht ws done on employees, but today everything is so specific, that the mode of appraisal is more precise and appropriate, rather thn being vague. n based on tis factor employees r later categorized into de so called teams mentioned by one of the debators fo development of dr interpersonal skills.tis means its not only an added advantage for de organization,  but also for the employee himself.probably a decade ago, u barely find employees leaving orgn after a months time, or mayb in a yrs time, but today de scenario is totally different.the organization is spendin dr share of cost or investment in training such employess, who they wil quit some day soon. i guess de(co.) r definitely not out  of dr mind to do so. but the reality is this, employees have always bein valued and considered, and today de r considered more thn before..cz of their level of knowledge, skills and ability. :)

Employees have always remained the same. What has changed is the industry which is become more competitive. It is for the employers to set parameters right. It is the employer to get a right fit for the job role and get their employees achieve their goals....rest all will fall in place

average employees as such does not exist when it comes to performance and appraisal. either one is valuable and get recognised for the work or they are under rated. If someone is doing his or her task in estimated time, organisation start expecting more output so organisation themselves kill the average employees either by motivating them to perform better or by destroying them by giving more pressure.

Employee does not exist anymore.  Whatever contribution one makes is  measured and this contribution simply becomes a part of statistic.  But one interesting thing has occured.  Earlier individual contribution was valued but no more.  Teamwork is what counts.  Since an individual is no more an individual it's a fact that employee does'nt exist.  But the best and interesting part is "teamwork" is born.  More emphasis is being laid on teamwork rather than individual contribution.  Maybe there could be a debate on "individual vs teamwork"
