The activity of earth will not stop. The Haiti was shaken at richter 7 and destroyed every mile stone.Such a massive destruction accompanied by loss of thousands of lives will never be made up.Presidential palace,UN Mission,Hospitals  are collapsed. The relief operations are paralysed. The Projects are now being conceptualised to earth quake compliant. We plan and Nature plan other wise.In my opinion, the project initiation must have inbuit safety aspect of buildings, organisational set up in tie up with specialised agencies. These must be parameters for performance of any projects. The performance is not only for completion but at least centuries ahead. The new technogy time machine should be developed to forcast ill effects of earth quake.I therefore invite expert  opinion to share their viewes whether such eventualies could effectvely tackled or challenged.

How can we blame someone for accidents? Collapsing of buildings during earthquakes is not unnatural. The same happened in Haiti. People died. That happens in every earthquake. We cannot blame everybody because of building's being victims in the hand of nature. There may be some flaws. But we must not forget. We are merely human beings. NO matter how strong building we make. It is always weak in front of nature.

i am in full agreement with Mr.James Hindman. The Haitian by nature should remain happy and joyful.May almighty and their own will help them to deal with one of the centuries dreaded calamity.i made my point in following fast paced development. The concrete structures though mile stone of economy have come in between rescue and relief operations. i have also suggested subsequently, though appear now hypothetically.to evolve the seismic resistant materials and also device to be connected with flooring to warn the inhabitants. The developed Nations and others must show solidarity with Haitians in need. The creme de la creme who escaped Haitian must support by technology or return to build the nation.

yep ur right sonam, we are just a human being we can't stop the natural disaster. But the haiti is located in north america those people are from under developed country so they don't know how to protect them from natural disaster and how to live a safe life. IS not their mistake, people from other country especially south american's they have to help their people. bcoz south america is well developed in every field. they have to guide them , if they did this before we can protect some of the people life in haiti.

The quake is one of the most critical activity of earth. The cyclone come the next. The modern humans are living in concrete built structures. One has to think to reduce the miseries of human beings. The structure now proposed to be built should compact and light. The roofing and floor should be so designed that when structures fall it should not cave in but it should cave out.The row houses up to single story are o.k.The distance between two towers should proportionately be  kept equal to height. The foundation and  ground floor should be so designed as to absorb the initial tremors and should be connected electronically to warn the residents. My suggestions may appear hypothetical but it is about time the designers think right now.

In initaiting stage, loss of lives and buildings due to natural calamities should also be projected. The efforts should be made to minimise the losses with inbuilt system within the complex. Can we desgn a lighter material of compact density absorbing the shocks so that lives could be saved to rebuild the infrastructural losses.

Interesting debate Mohammad, but the cause for this disaster cannot be human completely but he is also one reason. Earthquake are natural and we can predict it only to some extent. There are lightweight building materials available but people are not aware and in a position to afford them. When it is not in developed areas of America how can we expect that in Haiti. So it is nature and we need to face it. No point of blaming human.

Acts of nature leading to destruction are unavoidable and beyond human control. The aftermath however can be managed and minimized through crises management techniques. These techniques also include those that deal with prevention of the destructive effects of the crises when it happens.

There is also a view that believes that destruction due to acts of nature is ultimately beneficial for earth's rejuvenation.

I do not disagree with Engr. Mohammed Bakhsh, not at all.  However, the  lack of modern or appropriate technology is not the core problem in Haiti.  It is true that there is only one seismic engineer in Haiti...and in fact, he may have the distinction of being the only Haitian seismic engineer in the world.  And likewise, there are little more than a handful of civil, structural and mechanical engineers in the whole country.  But the problem is not the lack of access to such expertise as there is no paucity of such talent in the Western Hemisphere.  No, the problem lies to a great extent with the availabilty of financial resources, and to an even greater extent with the lack of political will...on both a domestic and international level...to foment genuine, equitable socio-economic development in this "poorest of the poor" nation,

If you look at the history of Haiti since its independence from France in 1804 it has suffered incredible political and economic disparity and discrimination due, first and foremost, to its racial make-up.  It has been blockaded, embargoed, invaded, occupied, exploited, "imperialized" and otherwise "marginalized" by the U.S., Western Europe, and even the Vatican, as well as its fellow Latin American nations.  For the past 73 years it has been governed consecutively and repeatedly by despotic dictators and puppet regimes who owe their allegiance exclusively to their own personal aggrandisement and enrichment.  In its entire 196 year history there has never been the opportunity, much less the incentive or reinforced motive to do anything collectively for the common good.  Base-line survival has been the order of the day...day-in and day-out, year-in and year-out.  For the most part, those individuals with a social conscience and/or personal ambition have been either subdued, co-opted, expelled or killed.  The most aggressive Haitians...the type of individual most needed for effective nation-building...have themselves simply escaped from the country.

Despite all of this the Haitian people remain one of the most courteous, ingenious and joyful cultures anywhere.
