Timings for Civil Engineers

I am not able to know why civil engineers are not having a time to refresh them selves. in many of the organisations civil engineers are working late hours with out any over time payment where as the same engineers from other departments like software, are ending their work schedule with in 8 hours including refreshment hour. all civil engineers are working in a particular situation i.e. job safety. why is INDIAN law is accepting this?

It is a very nice topic. Everybody thinks that, we are not getting the return upto the limit, what we are offering to the organization. If we ask ourselves the question “Are we really given our best of knowledge to the organization?  Are we really satisfied on this matter?

Then, they will definitely find their answer of the question themselves. If “yes” then find it out whether, it is applicable upon you or upon every staff of the company. If every staff of the company is dissatisfied with the management’s activities, then that company can not be a good company. Or if, only feel that, you are only the deprived person then find out (RAZ), why they are doing so with you only.

 

The people who thinks that, why Civil Engineers/ other engineers, broadly we can say employees work so late in the night that is absolutely wrong. This is a very silly question. I don’t want to hurt anybody, may be they haven’t face these situations ever or may be they are very junior in experience of work. There are some factors which leads the employees to work late night and even in holidays also:

 a)  If the employee is a hard worker and he understands the responsibility for which, he has been appointed.

b)Where day and night work goes usually, the managers those who, thinks about their work progress, they stays at late hours. They even come again at night also if, they stays nearby the site to enhance their juniors.

c) In summer times, in construction projects workers do not work in the day time and to complete the project the work at late night.

d)  All the time bound projects of any organization require much more time to concentrate to complete within a stipulated time, you have to give time for that purpose.So, there are countless reasons and may be these are all part of our job also and some may not be.

 

But, I do agree with one thing that, employee should get some benefits for that also. Otherwise morally they will feel that we are not getting nothing and that type of company never sustain in the market for a long time. I have seen there are so many companies who, offers extra benefit for this, may be monetarily or it may be by other way.

Well, if we talk about software engineers, generally they work for 8 hours a day and only 5 hours a week so this makes 40 hours of work per week. whereas , civil engineers have working hours from 8 in the morning, what civil engineers know for sure is that they have to be at site at 8 am, but when to logoff ( go home) they really dont know, there are number of reasons why civil engineers get late for eg. in structre, you came to know that the consultant didnt approve the reinforcement and formwork which leads to delay in concreting ( just an example)... but to achieve the target.... the engineer has to correct things and achieve the target... so this sometimes leads to working for 14-15 hours in a single stretch, for which no overtime is paid, if we calculate... generally a civil engineer works for atleast 12 hours per day.. so that makes us work 84 hours  a week.... but our pay is not comparable. apart from this, civil engineers have to worry about the people working for them, they have to see the people working are working as a team......they have more responsibilities compared to software guys.....if this is not enough there are Project management consultants, then there are Independent consultants and the last but not the least concessionaire( as the case may be) who need to be taken care off in every way......

so you see.... no wonder why Civil engineers are always busy....

ur argument is perfectly wrong that civil engineers are taking rest in sites. may be u know about them who r taking rest. But the real situation is they r working both mentally and physically. as u told ur people are working day and night, that may true for some people. but when u come to the neckless road u will find more software people enjoing their evening where as civil engineers r still working in sites.As u told real estate engineers may free from all the headaches where the control will not be in his hands. but the infrastructure engineers are allways be in stress to complete their job in the earliest. u may not know that ur soft ware parks are completed in a very less time. u, the soft ware professionals r working under A/C where the civil engineer is working under the Sun. in some places ur HR people not providing them even drinking water, but ur facilitated with Coffe vendors. u may be rewarded for ur work when a project is completed in the earliest, but no individual importance will be given to the civil engineer when he completes the project. anyway beteer u taste civil engineers dinner before u argue

don't worry with recession that is going on and with the market unstable one will have more time than ever before and they can make up with all the breaks that they want, as there is no projects that is coming and every industry has some what stalled, and I agree with shaju that every industry has work which is needed to be completed in time, so to meet the deadline one has to work all round with less workforce that is there at this point of time..this is not only for civil engineers but it is the same for all..

It is not true that engineers from other field are working only for 8 hours and having lot of refreshing hours. I have seen many engineers in our office working whole night and weekends when they have some project release etc. (which is very common). Again, civil engineers are more relaxed during working hours but software engineers are always under stress.

About Job security - there is no change; now all are at the same risk level as most of the industries are being affected.
