dear Mr Arikrishanan,

The problems is that this malaise is not limited only to politicians as is generally believed it has crept much deeper and in fact is suffocating the honest and making an example of it which in turn works as an example for all fence sitters to avoid being honest or truthful.

A good driver following all traffic the rules may fail to reach anywhere is not a good example, we must agree.

India is not a small country but a sub-continent where people of different ethenic cultures, co-exist and have survived major onslaughts from foreign invaders evident from its history. It will not be possible for dictators with malice to survive for long in this mighty country.

The continuance of dictators in the Arab world or even in communist countries is primarily because of the support of the people who have either accepted things for granted or due to religious beliefs and are contented with the life-styles prevailing there ignorant of the fact that there can be a much better existance  in the world.

In India with an enlightened youth and sensible elderly class within the civil and military one can rest assure that such dictators will first of all not be able to come to power and even if they do they will be ousted before they become irrestible.

No Harm in doing so as it is still better than getting deeper into the point of no return, where we seem are headed with present dispensation modes and methods.

Madam Indira Gandhi did it once, the Nation knows it how painful were the days we Indians had to go through during MISA rule! Such effort will paralyse our economy and destabilise our nation to an extent that some outsiders, who are somehow watching the entire ballgame in close quarters would take advantage of the situation plunder our wealth and go away!

I think yes......there should be a dictator kind of authority in the top who will help eradicate all the unwanted things from the country, corruption is breeding like anything in the country if action is not taken now it will be too late for that matter, and we need to learn from our neighbor China who has kept tabs on all these things by the communist government that they are having. With strict rules and regulations they have kept a check on corruption and are developing at a breath taking speed.

An autocratic or dictatorial leadership will strengthen the government machinery to effectively deal will law breakers. Woeing over of certain classes for the sake of winning elections, giving undue favours to specific persons or groups amassing excessive wealth can all be controlled with a firm hand. There are several examples where dictators have rescued the country from internal strife and then later handed over power to a civilian government. To quote a few we have General Nasser of Egypt, Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia, General Franco of Spain and the leaders of the erstwhile USSR. There is an apprehension that once a dictator comes to power it will be difficult for the common man to raise genuine concerns. This may be true in the short term but it is worthwhile enduring the suffering in return for long term gains. With widespread communication and the thinning of boundaries in today's world it is not possible for a corrupt or inefficient dictator to continue in office. The person who is able to deliver results will only succeed. To put things back on track I think people should be ready to accept some sacrifice.

Corruption was not so rampant in Indira Gandhi's time. Her motive was to remain in power after the electoral victory was set aside by Allahabad High Court. Had she stepped down and appealed in a higher court she could have made a comeback in a lawful manner or could have regained popularity at a later date. How could you expect reforms with such a dictator?

When things deteriorate to a point of no return hard options become inevitable.

Democracy in India today is like the words of famous Urdu Poet Mirza Ghalib Dil Ke Bahlane ko yeh khayal accha hai. What is the use of a democracy where murderers are acquitted by law courts and become chief ministers, Top police officials do atrocities to a common man's children and are let off after being convicted in lower courts, innocent youth are falsely implicated in criminal charges and their lives ruined and parents left in despair. Where young girls are constantly under fear of being assaulted, Old couples robbed in their houses in broad daylight, children kidnapped for ransom, law abiding citizens subject to road rage by hooligans, blackmarketeers control the prices of essential commodities, seudo- secularists bully the Dharma Gurus who try to preach love and brotherhood between human beings and one can go on adding many more instances to the list.

Thanks for the referral Deepak. Temporarily suspending democracy is not a sure-fire solution to the situation. Present government is perceived corrupt because of the inability of the present leaders to implement the laws of the land. The laws are in place, the POLITICAL WILL is needed to implement the applicable laws by the honest, well-meaning government functionaries/leaders. The present situation can be traced to the citizens wrong choice of chosen leaders when they have the opportunity to choose the right leaders. This situation, in most cases, happen in a country when the citizens base their decision a leader based on personality rather than party platform. Personality-driven choice by the citizens, in most cases, result to non-delivery of essential government services because the chosen official suffer from egoistical syndrome; thinking he can dispense with the laws, morality takes a back seat. Needless to state, corruption is deep-seated in government functionaries, if the citizens would allow officials do their thing, choose to be fence sitter. But for a vigilant and learned society, corruption would not thrive.

Corruption is not a problem of govt, its a problem of society. If all citizens refuse to indulge in corruption, then it will be difficult for corrupt politicians and govt officials to continue. Also private industrial groups encourage corruption and there's corruption inside private companies as well. Suspending democracy will not solve this. Have you seen situation of Burma, China, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Kazakistan? these countries are not democratic, but they all have deep rooted corruption as wall like India. It would be foolish to think that by removing democracy, we can remove corruption.

It is not at all necessary to suspend democracy, but people should elect their good leaders. Now everybody knows the real colour of our politicians and they should not be re-elected by the people who should teach this lesson to them. In India the culprits are escaping through some loop holes and the law makers are the law breakers. We need appropriate changes in our ruling systems or the governance of our country. Then it would be important to fix some pre-qualifications for the MPs and MLAs and those who are committing mistakes severe punishment should be accorded. Because of this politicians the bureaucrats are also tempted to involve in corruptions and start going hand in hand.

Thanks for the referral Mr.Deepak.

No. I is not required at this stage. Imagine a corrupt govt. with corrupt politicians and bureaucracy will play havoc. The last time we had this it was more of negatives rather than positives. The question is who will govern the nation during those days? Today even the defense forces with their top brasses under scanner and doubts, there is no one to do this job.

No. Deepak,At least, you have freedom to express. The draconian law never helps. It stunts the intellectual growth. Our neighbor is no better  as far as corruption is concerned. You are witness, strict regime have broken up. China's growth is due to "Deng" the visionary. They are now opening up and rehabilitating "Confucius" the great Chines Philosopher.

Certainly not. While corruption is the real threat to our prosperity, it is less due to democracy, more due to prevalent psychology both individual as well as social. It is true that there is apparent weakness in our form of democracy and justice delivery system. But these weaknesses can be overcome through clear focus on these weaknesses through introduction of measures like state funding of election, compulsory audit of political party accounts by independent auditors, timebound trial of corruption cases and criminal cases so that guilty can not escape the with impunity, compulsory vesting of ill gotten/unaccounted money to Govt etc. We need to build resolve to fight corruption by more active participation of the civil society and media. Democracy is our hard fought possession, it should not be suspended for even God's shake. In Autocracy, all hope will hinge only on one person!
