One need to pare down the business into selling and administrative and production. In administrative sides one has to deal with rduction in the financing costs reducing cost of borrowing , control of 'cash flow cycle'. In the production one has to manage the inventory, the wastages.

 system considers input and output. Profit would be maximised ,once the output with conformity improves. The ways to maximise out put depend on various elements of operation of the whole process. They are :

a) Healthy and up to date equipment.

b) Quality Raw  materials & resources

c) inventory minimum but optimum to continue the process .

d) delays and down time  of equipments minimum

e)  Logistic both inward and outward  operative to meet the requirements of the process in time

f) techno economic parameters to be set and followed to give budgetted yield

g) regular and effective monetoring and coordination to dress the non- conformities at low cost and in time

h) upgradation of the processes as per latest technology available with the competitors in the global market

i)effective marketing marketing and sales process

Today due to neck to neck competition ,equation of profitability has changed, earlier it was sales- price but now a days it has became sales-cost.I completely agree with you , profitability can be increased by improving productivity and performance.Prouductivity refers to out put of something at given in put rate.So input can be minimized to get same output or input can be incresed to raise pordcutivity.Improving labour prodcutivity will help to reduce ration of material to labor, improved productivity of material will help to reduce wastage of material, improved productivity of machines will help to reduce down time,improved productivity of communication and logistic will help to reduce money converstion cycle time.These things will help to cut down cost associated with manufacturing product.Subsequently, profitability can be increased by improving productivity and performance imrpovement.
