Today a if you are a doctor with a decent practice, you can really enjoy a great life courtesy the medical companies. They get almost everything on earth from the medical companies....laptops, television sets, mobiles, shirts trousers, under garments, foreign travels and what not !! No wonder they keep pushing the expensive drugs to common man.

Sad but true. This despite ICMR providing free access in India to sources of evidence based medicine such as the Cochrane Collaboration's publications. maybe if patients wisen up and query doctors on the evidence behind their choice of management options, then doctors will have to pull up their socks and rely less on heresay from med reps and 'data on file' from pharma companies.

Ofcourse 'yes!' is what comes to my mind when I think of this statement. If there is/are any doctor(s) in this argument plz let us know on what basis do you decide a go or no-go for a newly launched medicine, a pharma rep approaches you with ?

Majority of doctors have no time to update with current trends and developments. Most of them after their working hours in their government jobs spend the rest of the day and nights visiting private nursing homes. Whatever little time is left out is spent with families or resting. This leaves no time for them to read and catchup and update themselves.

I do agree with you Charles sir.. yes with the change in global scenario & competition in every field , medical profession is now no more untouched.. and the points raised by you to cope up the situation now doctors are very much depend on the skills(educative skills/ teaching) of medical representatives......

I partially agree with your arguments, while a large number of doctors are drifting away from current updates/ newer knowledge and CME's while trying to desperetly keep their knowledge quotient up and this is where Pharma gaints play their game swiftly through a slew of Marketing endavours and change the mindsets of the doctors towards their Brand , they are doing what they deem fit, it is up to Doctors to fall pray to their game plan/ practice

Exceptions are every where but yes this may be true that doctors are influenced by pharma companies & their should be strict regulatory norm to control such practices by pharma companies. I feel that there should be a defined regulatory system to check such practices like there should be a control over distribution of gifts to doctors/ sponsorship for organising any medical event.

DOCTORS...EDUCATED ...NOT REGISTERED MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS....ARE NOT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF Pharmaceutical Companies....mind it...They use their own calibre after going through medical journals and updates.

I agree with Sanjay on this. Its quite natural for a casual observer to interpret that doctors never read or update their knowledge and the big ques outside the clinics of popular clinicians can mislead anyone about the sincerity in his/her doctor's prescriptions. However, hardly any patients actually get to see the real story behind the scenes, where the physicians update their knowledge and skills. Of course, there are bad fish out there in tank, but to generalize this thing is actually unfair with the majority honest people. making money, I guess is not wrong as long as its through fair means, and hence, to see an idiot being trained by pharma companies in every well to do doctor is grossly wrong.

Medical companies are introducing their products to those who utilize its benefits ie doctors as a part of their buisiness. I don`t think all the doctors are recommending the medicines just by in the words of MR. A docotr who desire to maintain his practice and good will in serving humanity always update their knowledge with all the possible manner. We all know there are multiple brands of same combinations. There foreeach companies will do a better marketting techniques to sell out their products. The decision making point is always the selection of drug. In other hand new informatinons and inventions are coming up regarding drugs, diseases and its managements. I belive that doctors are always forced to up date their knowledge regading medicines and also about diseases and finally they are the decision makers not the MRs or pharmacutical companies.

the doctors of the yore were not having access to the new generation information gudgets like internet ,video or tele conf. etc. therefore they did rely lot on the pharma companies.Thats y the whole of medical fraternity was guided by the representatives of the MNC pharma companies as they used to share the latest about the drug molecules. But this isnt true of the new generation medical practitioners as they are technology savvy and use every contemporary gudget to access the latest information to use in satisfying the patients. They dont welcome the pharma companies anymore and their practice is not absolutely driven by the so called research companies.Todays doctors doctors know that what is gainful to them therefore they take full advantage of these companies for sponsorships and cash generation .This many a times goes against the patients as the doctors give substandard medicines to the patients inorder to oblidge the sponsoring pharma companies. Some doctors are wrking for pharma companies only who market them and bring patients to them. The big pharma companies like Ranbaxy,Workhard etc started their hospitals on this model only.
