If you are talking of territorial India, I think it is near impossible to define it. The closest we came to the India we know today is when the British came to India and brought together different kingdoms. Finally as they left hurriedly in the aftermath of the World War 2, they transferred powers of their territories in Asia to half a dozen new entities. It goes to the credit of statesmanship and political maturity of leaders like Pundit Nehru and Sardar Patel that we see a major country like the India of today established out of the disparate sovereignties. At times they used force like in the 100 odd princely states and coercion and faith enhancement like in J&K and North-East. However the present day political leaders seem to unfasten all that we achieved (because of the efforts of these two giants) in their mad rush for power. I also agree with Shameena that the economy of a country is the foundation of any modern state. We are no longer in the Middle Ages where loyalty to one man, religion or sheer subservience will keep us together. Thus yes! United India is a myth. The closest I got to get a feel of it is in Jawaharlal Nehru's acknowledged work - The discovery of India. Yet even he is also unable to comfortably define India as a landed territory but he does define 'strand of Indianness' that runs through the sub-continent. But unfortunately with each passing day that too is diminishing fast.

the divide is all democratic! Our country is one of the best examples of an extended democracy! We believe that the varna system that had divided the masses by virtue of the profession and responsibility that they carry out within the society was the correct way of compartmentalising people, it is thus the extension of the people, by the people for the people!! Its sad to note that even today a lot of social groups have these base beliefs firmly entrenched in their minds and continue moral policing. United India is an exercise that cannot be passed as a bill in parliament that Anna Hazare would fast on, it is not a mandate that the constitution can lay down, it is a movement that people need to realise and stand up for! We have to initiate the process, we have to fight the demons within the socio political circles, we have to cut the red tapes and the bureaucracy to the extent that we stand up as a single voice, a single vote and a single crusade! Thanks for the referral Shameena

Yes, it's very unsettling that behind all the smiles and camaraderie, there is a competitive killer's spirit.

I would like to share an article published on Siliconindia.com
In South, a state is at stand-still demanding separation; in Northwest, a region is plagued with extremism which always wanted to break free, Northeast, a league of states frustrated at the tyrannical rule of the central government; and above all, another group of extreme leftists fighting to topple the government - A panoramic view of real India, a fact hard to digest but impossible to ignore. I wonder if the myth of united India has any more relevance or rather, it ever had?
The burning issue of Telangana seems to be an endless crisis with normal life being affected badly due to the ongoing protect. The city of Hyderabad is at a standstill ever since the agitations turned violent and rigorous. As many of the government employees are taking part in the strike by all sections of people' for the cause of a separate Telangana state, the public offices are mostly closed down in the state. The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry estimates the loss caused by the protest at around 500 crore a day.
The alarming situation is not just the Telangana issue, but the resultant demands from other parts of the country for freedom from their mother states. After the center conceded to create a separate Telengana state, there have been demands for nine other new states including Gorkhaland in West Bengal, Coorg in Karnataka, Mithilanchal in Bihar and Saurashtra in Gujarat. The demands are mostly from different organizations like Gorkha Janamukti Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Dal and some from individuals. The other demands are for a Vidarbha state in Maharashtra, a new Greater Cooch Behar state from parts of West Bengal and Assam, a Bhojpur state comprising areas of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and Bundelkhand state from many districts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The realization of a Telangana state can give rise to widespread protests and agitations from different parts of the country demanding separation and creation of many new ones.
