Widely used in the construction industry, materials like PVC,asbestos, radioactive materials, lead, and mercury are used in buildings and houses in window frames, doors, paints, gutters, cable ducting and conduits, flooring, wall coverings, roofing etc . This materials are termed as poisonous but at the same time there is not enough evidence to support a conclusion that these materials are consistently worse on a life cycle environmental and health basis. Is there a way to stop using this materials or else we need to stay with it. Share your thoughts on it. Thanks

People like Ashok, Rajeeb and Pragya are saying not to use but are they sure that these materials are not used at their homes first. This materials are relatively cheap, lightweight, strong and adaptable to many applications.  Coming on to PVC, Life cycle analysis has been carried out by the Association of Plastic Manufactures into the energy content of various polymers, PVC has the lowest.
Data is summarized:PVC 53 (MJ/kg),PE 69 (MJ/kg),PET 84 (MJ/kg) and  PVC is also the best material so far discovered for many medical applications.

  1. I feel that all hazardous material ultimately help in environmental degradation - howsoever we may plan for their waste management.
  2. So in a way by using such construction material we are creating more problems for the future generations than solving any for the present.
  3. Thus our endeavour should be to replace all the material whcih are proven environmental hazard with more eco friendly even if it means more load on the trees or nature - which I feel regenerates itself.

Well all materials created are harmful toenvironment becuase while constructing we changethe environement a little bit. But till suitable alternative the logic syas lesser evil is preferred for sake of comfort.

PVC once processed do not DEGRADE in environment or do not react; mostly INERT material hence not hazardous for use in building as pipe/cable/ducting/florring/false celing/potable water supply as per indian standard IS 4985. There is no effect on water also.No free lead or any other substances are traced out in finished products.
Mulitple advatages are available compare to conventional materials.

Check out the data given out by Srinath Srinivasan, that will tell you is PVC really as harmful as you think. Coming to the postive side of PVC - PVC is difficult to ignite and in the absence of a powerful external flame will not continue to burn. This is due to its chlorine compound. This makes it an ideal construction and cable material. PVC doesnt corrode due to bad weather...

These materials can be used at the places , where pollution control is not the sole criteria for deciding on use , as these materials are cheap & durable. However , I recommend use of these materials exclusively for temporary works.

every one living in this world is connected in one way or the other by living things and non living things, called natural envornment.  man has learnt to live with all  the evil forces of nature and succeded in a long way.in  the same way by using certain harm full substances in the construction industry which are all not proved as harmfull to human being will continue to stay in the industry for ever.

I hope it is quite rash and unthoughtful to risk an individuals lives involved in production facilities involving asbestos.

Extensive documentation is in place about adverse effects of asbetos. kindly refer to that which lead to change in your point.

Extensive research has been carried out in developed countries about using asbestos as construction material. There is a ban on construction materials containing asbestos in developed countries.

Long term hazardous effects on health of  individuals working in asbestos production facilities can not be overlooked.
Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel and risk the lives of fellow brethren definite measures should be put in place to curb their production.

For temporary construction i.e., for a short span it may be allowed in areas where you do not have any other bio-degradable items for similar use but for permanent construction it should be avoided as far as possible.

In my opinion PVC to be the most environmentally harmful plastic and PVC is toxic throughout its life cycle, the chemicals used to make it are cancer causing and extremely harmful. These toxic additives don’t stay in the product, but instead come out during use especially during disposal. However,we continue to produce PVC, all the while knowing this.
