There should be a National Debate about the relevance of the words in India now.

There are many other ways where we Indians watch while the fundamental rights and duties get trampled by many on a daily basis. I dont understand why we make such a fuss about such incidents. Where are all these people when the nation is being led by corrupt and dishonest citizens and the international press calls as one of the most corrupt nation. Is that not a bigger disrespect to the nation?

Initially the Vande Maataram was proposed for the national anthem but the major minority group was opposed to it. The Prime Minister then suggested to adopt Tagore's Jana Gana mana in order to avoid controversy and conflict in a newly formed independant state which had seen enough of bloodshed and internal disorder. It must have been known to the legislative assembly the purpose for which it was written but perhaps it was the best option at that time. The public in general also did not oppose as their thoughts were directed towards the development of the country. In the present scenario many changes have taken place in society and the old order changeth yielding place to new. There is no harm in modifying the national anthem. Also the minorities do not care for the Jana Gana Mana so why not revert back to the Vande Maataram which has been given an equal status with the National anthem.

Good piece of information! The link provides some useful information about our National Anthem! http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/NationalAnthem(E).pdf The following is Tagore's English rendering of the anthem: Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people, Dispenser of India's destiny. Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha, Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal; It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise. The saving of all people waits in thy hand, Thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to thee. The occasions on which the full versions or the short version will be played have been indicated at the appropriate places in these instructions.

As per NLK transliteration Jana gaṇa mana adhināyaka jaya he Bhārata bhāgya vidhātā Pañjāba Sindhu Gujarāṭa Marāṭhā Drāviḍa Utkala Baṅga Vindhya Himācala Yamunā Gaṅgā Ucchala jaladhi taraṅga Tava śubha nāme jāge Tava śubha āśiṣa māge Gāhe tava jaya gāthā Jana gaṇa maṅgala dāyaka jaya he Bhārata bhāgya vidhāta Jaya he jaya he jaya he Jaya jaya jaya jaya he! The above is copied from wikipedia where you can find number of mistakes like Sindhu etc. Still, no body could rectify/ clearify in public interest that so as to what is the correct version of our National Anthem. There are number of mistakes in the same published in varios Govt. publications. If, Raghu is presenting legally right, we should welcome the change provided the same is acknowledged by the Govt. of India. I DO NOT KNOW THAT, the present leaders (Neta) them selves know the correct version or to sing the national anthem and to respect that.

just a thought for the National Anthem! How well do you know about it? I have always wondered who is the 'adhinayak' and 'bharat bhagya vidhata', whose praise we sing. I thought might be Motherland India! Our current National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana'is sung throughout the country. Did you know the following about our national anthem, I didn't. To begin with, India 's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honor of King George V and the Queen of England when they visited India in 1919. To honor their visit Pandit Motilal Nehru had the five stanzas included , which are in praise of the King and Queen.(And most of us think it is in the praise of our great motherland!! !) In the original Bengali verses only those provinces that were under British rule,i.e . Punjab, Sindh,Gujarat ,Maratha etc. were mentioned. None of the princely states were recognized which are integral parts of India now Kashmir, Rajasthan, Andhra, Mysore or Kerala. Neither the Indian Ocean nor the Arabian Sea was included, since they were directly under Portuguese rule at that time. The Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka implies that King George V is the lord of the masses and Bharata Bhagya Vidhata is 'the bestower of good fortune'. Following is a translation of the five stanzas that glorify the King. *First stanza:* (Indian) People wake up remembering your good name and ask for your blessings and they sing your glories. (Tava shubha name jaage; tava shubha aashish maage, gaaye tava jaya gaatha) *Second stanza*: Around your throne people of all religions come and give their love and anxiously wait to hear your kind words.. *Third stanza:* Praise to the King for being the charioteer, for leading the ancient travelers beyond misery. *Fourth stanza: *Drowned in the deep ignorance and suffering, poverty-stricken, unconscious country? Waiting for the wink of your eye and your mother's (the Queen's) true protection.. *Fifth stanza*: In your compassionate plans, the sleeping Bharat (India) will wake up. We bow down to your feet O' Queen, and glory to Rajeshwara (the King). This whole poem does not indicate any love for the Motherland but depicts a bleak picture. When you sing Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, whom are you glorifying? Certainly not the Motherland. Is it God? The poem does not indicate that. It is time now to understand the original purpose and the implication of this, rather than blindly sing as has been done the past fifty years. So they can as well play Vande Mataram, which is a far better composition in praise of our Dear Motherland India

There is no harm in changing anything..so what if it is National Anthem. What matters is respect. Any investigation shall not blindly take action against this gentleman. But such changes need to follow a protocol. In the larger interest of integrity country's systems the protocol must be followed.

Seems a good and a very logical explanation. A group of experts can study this and if it is correct grammatically they can recomend the changes nation wide. Most of all there is no need to punish the manager - who is a courageous individual. Really brave.

I don't see a wrong intention here but problem is that school cant impose their opinion on such matters. I agree national anthem needs to be more patriotic than eulogistic but i guess our politicians don't have enough courage for such changes.

Even though what he says may be correct but he has no right to change the anthem on his own. He could have represented his case to the HRD ministry and then on to the courts if not getting any redressal. How can one individual change what has got a bearing on the entire nation ? tomorrow some one will claim there are no lions in the forest so can we remove them from the seal as the official emblem ? Or someone will claim lotus cannot be the national flower as it represents a certain flower, so can they go ahead and take an arbitrary decision to change it ? No way - these things have to happen through national dialogue and not otherwise.

No not yet all required , if like that the coming generation will forget the anthem itself and there wont that respect to it also as for now. This folks they always want to their name displayed somewhere or other thats why they keep on changing it now and then. Its simply not required.

I support for NO. I welcome changes according to our present requirements but with proper methods and guidelines warranted. Even our constitution needs a lot of reforms to suit our present needs but it can not be changed just like that and the changes need resolution to be passed in favor in the parliament with proper ratifications. Thanks for the referral Ms.Ravali.

Hey, I am not in favor of this kind of meddling into others' business. Whatsoever, his NATIONALISTIC Feelings are, the manager should create a new version of Anthem and get it endorsed by the Govt as Tagore's was accepted. Unless an expressive permission is granted by the author, this kind of action is not justified. It is , not so easy to be a Nobel Laurette's for Literature. His works might have passed the time but, his mind is still alive.(Where the mind is without fear or favour......). Let us introduce a new Anthem if majority of people feel, Tagores' is not accepted. Stop meddling into others work. Be creative of your own.

What has been accepted as 'National' cannot be changed without going the proper procedures. If the school is so particular, it should initiate the process. Changing is wrong. I wonder why nobody has filed a case against the school - disrespecting the nation.
