In what is going to be a big  co-branding exercise, Virgin Mobile may tie up with about as many as 50 brands in the country. Virgin Mobile, Richard Branson-led Virgin Group’s mobile brand, in an attempt to firmly establish itself in Indian market, is in talks to link up with brands from sectors like apparel, restaurants, electronics and even consumer goods.

So, will it succeed in getting the attention of the young?

Yes,.....With this initiative Virgin aims to gain ground majorly into the youth market as it hopes these tie-ups with ‘youthful’ brands will serve it to increase its reach to the younger generation. The company had earlier claimed it planned to acquire 10 per cent market share among the youth.

The idea is to connect with the youth and be a part of brands that they identify with. If you look at the telecom market now, there is no compelling reason why a customer should stay with an operator. If Virgin also gives the standard telecom offerings, we will not be able to retain a customer. The idea of this is to go beyond the same old telecom tariff offerings and create a brand value and brand loyalty.

No I don't think its very easy. The Indian telecom industry already has many big fishes who will not let Virgin to take over the market so easily. Now both the ambani brothers are into the telecom market, competition is very high & for Virgin it will be like chewing iron balls...

Thus it will be very tough to take the customers o the big platers as they will also give offerings better than Virgin will...

You never if or how well they will succeed because you never know what the future holds but only time and the right strategy will tell. Many young people are into top brand electronics as well as older people.

It all depends on their strategy, planning, management and marketing message. They may not be able to take over and become the completely top brand but they might be able to have a good presence and make some type of impact.

It is very vague what success means? The more the competition the lower the profits. Existing companies will not easily let Virgin have the youth market they will also come out with something unique. At the end, all will be chasing the same clients with lots of incentives/sops which ultimately will hit their bottom lines. I say this from my practical experience of 18 years in Canada. I was responsible for budeting Nationally for the 2nd largest communications company. We used to struggle to meet the bottom line because of the increased competition, pressure on revenue, lower ARPU and delivering shareholders value

I support your views, Leena.

Virgin mobile will definitely get success among the youth, if they tie- up with youth famous brands & give some exclusive good offers for youth.
