Visa-on-arrival for tourists: Is this a good move?

India on Wednesday said it will offer visa-on-arrival facility to the citizens of five countries, namely Singapore, Finland, New Zealand, Luxemburg and Japan on a pilot basis for a period of one year. But has plans to increase to 18 countries in future.

The government has offered the visa-on-arrival facility to citizens of these countries unilaterally. None of the five countries currently offer this facility to Indian nationals.  The move to allow visa-on-arrival facility to the select group of countries is intended to boost tourism sector and help the country increase foreign exchange earning. The slowdown in the world economy which started last year had affected the domestic tourism sector as foreign tourist inflow to the country fell sharply.

But then with terrorism on the rise across the world and perpetrators trying to gain entry through various other means into a country, do you think this Visa-on-arrival is a good move?

I think this is a good move from India as getting a visa will be the utmost difficult thing while travelling and making this simpler, you can see the increase in number of travellers in the country, the single most thing which really irks traverllers in India is the complexity that one has to go through when one is trying to enjoy his stay here, and making this visa on arrival is a good step in that direction and making it easier for the traveller to choose India as their next travel destination. But then as I said earlier in the description with terrorism on the rise, the one thing which will be critical here to track these travellers on a daily basis, where they are and what they are doing, if we are able to keep that in check then this visa on arrival will really boost tourism in India.

How this can be a good move, when only India is giving this option for travellers and the same is not being offered by the 5 countries for Indian travellers, it should always be a mutual agreement when something like this is being offered, it just shows how India is desperate to make money from this tourism initiative, and also this poses a serious internal security issue. What if     traveller turns out to be a terrorist, tracking them will be difficult and in India one still can do anything as there is serious loopholes in the security system and this visa on arrival is a bad option and a wrong move according to me.  Adesh it will do more good by promoting Indian travel destinations abroad in some other way than getting into these visa on arrival which i guess no other country is offering for anybody else.

If India wants to be best Tourist Destination, need to issue visa on arrival. Then only be an incredible india!

Adesh I am totaly agree on this Visa on arrival as for not only being as travel professional but also thinking the need of more globlization of the era.This is not only increase the tourist traffic to India but also in some or other way business and mututal relation too.As I remember when we were all friends planned to visit Malaysia as group  of 21 and when we booked all ticketsa n hotel we came to know 3 frnds are not getting time for their Visa and all.Later we knew there are on arrival visda process there we were very happy and just entered Malaysia and did the Visa formality at airport itself.Now in such case we able to make our travel but it onarrival visa option was not there either we would have cancel our trip or left these three frnds here in India.

2nd thing people citing example of terrorism is this not here even?Terrorisam we can't stop only by allowing visa by interview. I don't think terrorist will come on tourist visa instead of crossing border?

Any way it depends on us how we can use a tool like sord either on enemy or on our own brother?

Only one thing i would like to tell in this matter that...... " PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE ". For the country like ours i dont think this would be a wise decision. When the travellers have no wrong intentions then whats wrong in getting visa inhand and travel..... Thank you, Manish N.
