http://www.nokiaphoneblog.com/images/vodafone_225.jpg

The new solar powered phone VF 247 is targeted at the rural areas where people mostly face difficulties for shortage of electricity and frequent power-cut. The VF 247 needs no electricity rather automatic charges will be done by exposure to sun light. Even, the phone also charges in a room under normal daylight with special support of hardware and software.

"The full charge of the phone will last for more than eight days offering four hours of talk time. The phone comes with features like FM radio, color screen and a powerful torch light."

Will these solar powered phones be a success?? what are your views people.......

I think this will workout really well for the rural people, where there is very less supply of electricity and a solar powered mobile phone will do wonders, It is seamingly visible these days where companies are targetting the bottom of the pyramid market with product like these, and in a way vodafone are also promoting people with their connections interms of people using their network for that money along with it they are also selling their mobile phones, so with a product like this they are targetting two segments. So a good move by them, also people are getting something which is really worthy product to go with...if they provide better service interms of connectivity this product is a sure shot hit....not only in rural but also in the urban areas as well...

I am on this side just because as a mobile phone Vodafone doesn't have that great product, they are having too basic phones which hardly has any features to work in urban areas, and its success cant be measured just by the sales figures that will happen in Rural areas, more mobile connections are happening in the urban areas, and for them we need more features which is not there in this phone. So bit skeptic about this products success...

This will be a great product, especially for the rural market. With the intended price, this will capture a good market share where people by phone just for making calls utility. This will also capture market where people use mobile for a long talk and the mobile will charge itself. In addition, this will reduce the electricity bill as well.

"I think it can create a new target cunstomer base for vodafone. They can target customers in rural and sub urban areas with less infrastructure. It will also in a way create employment opportunities and support the business growth of SSIs maunfacturing solar equipments"

It depends on solar power availability and power of the capacity of the device to absorbe the solar energy within very short span of time.

Thats really great , acc to my personal view on this is , i would most probably purchasing it nd join the legacy. U kno US is developed country they hav aroungg 200 Neuclear enriched Power plants , then still they are switching on use of NATURAL RESOURCES, coz they knows very well about its Futuristic use for their further developement nd to come as a great power other then Russia nd China.

I havn;t seen it so i thing as its is based on solar energy so it would be safe for us too, coz it would be free from Electromagnetic waves which are emmited by other electric charge based fones.

someone has rightly said a single drop combines with other to form an ocean. The concept which vodafone brings into the market will be helpful in saving electricy to a huge extent. This will not only helpful in rural areas but in cities where demand is increasing and supply is not.

Yes !!! Of Course it is going to be a sureshot success !!!

At the Corporate level giving credence to alternate enery (the most needed) is a master move.

Secondly,it seems to be user-friendly--so,forget rural, it will be lapped up in the urban areas  as well!!

So,well done--innovation is the need of the hour!!!

DEFINATELY ... IN INDIA IT WILL SURELY DO WELL  !!

We are a vast nation with Power irregularities in many regions. This Mobile Handset will be a BLESSING IN DISGUISE for people of those regions. I know for a fact, some regions in Barmer District of Rajasthan... when any person from the village is going to a town/city... He carries so many Mobiles n chargers, so as to charge them for others.

This VODAFONE FONE WILL BE A SURESHOT WINNER !

Happy Debating Friends !

I don't think it will work, since mobile phones are used more in doors getting the phone charges will be very difficult. Secondly mobile has to be quick to respond so it needs regular power which can be supplied by a charged battery only.

It makes more sense to have solar chargers instead of powering handsets directly like calculators. Most of the time the handsets remain in one's pockets,so how can it be charged?

Mobile is an item of emergency use and can't be dependant on natural resources which are still unsure of their CLF's and hence constant performance. Once the natural resources like solar/wind power etc guarantee such long term uninterrupted performance and are streamllined this will be a successful gadget.

True.. Samsung did launcha similar mobile but it was over priced if I remember correctly.. This is priced with an intention that consumers can experience the product. People wouldnt mind spending this money just to try out a product. And if it generates real interest, we're bound to see the rest of the majors follow suit with more complex and dependable products.
