These days, we can hear lot of hype about Vodafone's cheapest mobile phone on the planet ready to be launched in the market. These are Vodafone 150 and the 250, the former being described by Vodafone as the world's cheapest handset. The phone unveiled at the on going MWC will be sold for $15 (Rs. 700) and is aimed at developing markets. It is expected to see an Indian launch in the not too distant future.

These phones will provide voice and SMS services and packs in quite a few features which cannot be expected in such low priced phones. For example,

* 150 supports mobile payment services
* has a miniUSB connector
* alarm clock
* a torch
* calculator a currency converter
* 2 embedded games
* memory for up to100 entries in phonebook plus SMS storage and many more.
The battery is rated at 500mAh and offers standby time up to 400hrs and talk time up to 5hrs.

So users, according to you, will people go for these kind of phones, when already there is so much demand of Smartphones in the market?

This sub $15 handset will open a vast new market. Now, even a poor man also will have stay at his place and learn to earn without any hard work. Roughly 60 million spread over 3 lakh villages under penetrated will boost up new connections especially in rural area, where, still the people are dreamed for a cell phones whose participation are unavoidable and rather it may be a social work to provide cell-phones at cheaper rates and to provide best technology to them, Its really amazing mobile, any buddy can use, its simple to use, and simple to purchase, and simple to carry (handy).

I have my doubts if this will work for long, if at all. Because the second hand market in the rural area has available phones for the same price but with more features, and well the service for both the second hand & the new ones would almost be the same, given that service in India is an alien concept. Also, the market is already captured by smart phones and in the metro cities people will prefer smart phones inspite of its high price just because of the high tech technology it uses. So, I don't think the Vodafone phones can do its business beyond the bottom of the pyramid customers....

Yes, people can go for these kind of phone. To be very frank all are not in need of smartphones.More than 50% people are buying smartphones just to show their status.Most of the features of smartphone are not used by these kind of people.The person who only wants to keep cel phone for calling and messaging can go for these kind of cell phone.

Yes, it'll be good for offices to hand over to employees with official numbers, for people with limited means who wants connectivity, and even for people who have smart phones who want an emergency device handy where they can backup numbers or make emergency calls when their cell dies out.
