Oracle has been pursuing a lot of Java driven projects. Sun-controlled MySQL held the promise of overtaking Oracle someday in Medium/Long term. More than shoring up its revenues at the risk of increasing its own bulk and complexities, it was Oracle's desire to wrest control of these open source technologies that led to its acquiring Sun.
