There are many reasons why a person leave an organisation and none may be due to fickle mindedness. However, I believe good employees should be rehired once management is comfortable with the reason for them leaving in the first place.

Dear Mr.Naushad, I think you have not understood the arguments posted. But your argument has been understood on the comparison of sinking ship & rats. Here, the sinking ship..... the constrained company the rats.... the fickle minded employee Well, when a company faces financial constraints, it will not be in a position to make salaries to the employees. How long will the employees wait, say 2 or 3 months. During these 2/3 months without salaries how they will manage their families? [ they have to make house rent, provision shop, children educational expenses like tuition fees & college fees, & other medical expenses, and in certain cases children awaiting marriages etc.,] After 2/3 months period, if the employer is not able to make salaries, what is plight of the employees? Still you expect the employees to continue in the jobs ? Sir, it is a question of SURVIVAL, naturally they have to leave for finding out some other jobs. Under the circumstances, knowing the situation, the other employer will exploit them for lower salaries. Do you want to call these employees as fickle minded? On the contrary, when the company is under financial constraints, the employer has two options, that is either the employer has to reduce the manpower or he has to sell the company to somebody else. In case of management change, what is the guarantee that the new management will keep all the employees? Naturally the change of gear will be there. The new management will restructure the organization in accordance with its taste which will attract addition & deletion of employees.Under this, leaving the organization, the employees can not treated as fickle minded. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEE MAY NOT LIKE TO LEAVE AS HE COULD NOT FIND BETTER JOB. One should have the practical approach to resolve the issues. FITTEST CAN SURVIVE IN THIS WORLD. STRENGTH IS LIFE, AND WEAKNESS IS DEATH. Hence the WELCOME BACK POLICY IS SUITABLE ONLY FOR THE DESERVING CANDIDATES. Not for all. happy debating friends...

Dear Naushad, Good you are relating to animal kingdom. The flock essentially requires a leader yet only one can lead and whenever the rebel succeeds in defeating the leader it returns. This is appreciated in animal business. Coming back to companies you may as well call re-engineering or renovation a compromise, as they may be as much need based as recalling requisite talent.

Dear Mr.Makrand/Naushad sirs, Welcome back policy in an organization has only been related to the top performers and achievers and NOT TO THE FICKLE MINDED PEOPLE.The fickle minded people's mind will be oscillating and they will not be in a position to take a correct decisions. Consequently, they can not contribute to the organization. Why people leave the organizations? As for as my knowledge goes, it is due to the following reasons: When companies encounter financial difficulties and change of management. when the contributions and performances are not recognized by the immediate superiors and who failed to recommend for the next line promotions.[ Favoritism & nepotism] When the bosses lack leadership quality and difference of opinion with his team members. No doubt whether right or wrong boss is always correct will make them to leave the organizations and they do not want to fight with their bosses. These are the very valid reasons for leaving the companies.

I dont know if "a welcome back policy" is actually called for. But yes, i support the concept of rehire after a lapse of time. The competence growth is quite fast these days as skill sets change significantly over short duration of time particularly in the IT industry. Where such a scenario exists, the employee who is returning after a 3 year stint elsewhere, is an employee with a different competence, more mature and with a greater degree of market exposure. He does have a small edge in that he is already familiar with the organization and his coming up to speed would be faster.

You are correct Surya Josyula. Good performers with dedication are the assets of any organizations. Their contributions/achievements should be encouraged and recognized to motivate them perform well that will in turn enhances their confidence level to perform effectively in order to accelerate the growth for the companies. The employees are also growing with the growth of the company.Organization's results are the group efforts and not by the single individual.

Hi, Yes there should be a Welcome back policy in organizations so as to encourage people moving back to their old environment where they can contribute more. But there can be some criteria like tenure period with the company, appraisal cycles feedback, salary last drawn, and recommendation from existing employees or clients etc..This will encorage companies getting trained and ready resources for specific jobs and they can develop a tradition of providing employees a longtime association even though there might be minor break in that. Only thing employees shouldn't use it as a method of only getting salary hike or position hike. So, I support for this.

Most employees quit the organization by some or other factors influence which was not satisfying. There are many cases where most of them feel that they should go back to their old organization and some organizations do welcome these employees. In my view there can be a "Welcome back policy" followed by an organization, so that the employees would always feel secure about their job and the organization. However there should be a criteria defined how and whom to rejoin in an organization like the best performers, top contributors, past record in the organization etc.

THEN... LETS CALL THIS " A COMPROMISE" & not a Welcome Back ! A LION... It helps us Humans a lot, to study Animal Behaviour. I for one do it. A LION is a KING/ LEADER of His Tribe... till He is there, If he loses a Challenge to his Leadership ( by another Lion ) & Leaves his Tribe... He is as Good as a RAT or a LOSER. Why Welcome Back a LOSER ? and if at all it is Mutually Beneficial to both, then lets call it a COMPROMISE !

Dear Natteraja, When a SHIP IS SINKING... the RATS are the first to leave ! If we take this reason of your's as valid, then these kind of people should NEVER be Welcomed back. They left the Organisation when they were really needed. They came back when it suited their taste... ARENT THEY FCKLE MINDED ?

I tend to support Naushad Sahab! This is the reason why I feel that exit interviews play a very important role and HR should be persistent about it! Everybody who leaves a company has a valid reason to leave and maybe a valid reason to be back! Why come back when you are leaving it OR vice versa, why leave it when you want back?? I find such peole very fickle minded by nature and I will never trust them. Thanks for the referral :)

The subject is thoroughly need based and specific, therefore can not be generalized. No company would think twice if the need is dire. As policy nothing wrong if the need can justify.
