Branding is the nomenclature component i.e the establishmnet of a mark in ythe process of developing the brand quite popularly confusedwith the act of brand building. In the event of branding marketeers view the activity as being less bang for the buck due to the passive nature of the investment and hence the choice of using more profitable ( ROI skewed ) activations such as promotions. Having said that factors such as PLC should be taken into accopunt for e.g new entrants like Aircel need to invest heavily in brand awareness and in the current context of recession probably a viable investment. Overall i would feel that the state of gloom would deter the activity called " branding" as far as brand building goes i guess it would be even further on the marketeres radar for the moment

The scope of branding would shoot up at the time of recession because sales and marketing are the two ares which a company can never avoid as the company runs due to these two things.
