True, Kiran, Even I have heard what you mentioned but this thinking reduces the shelf life of both the individuals and company.. It is hard work and knowledge that pays in long run.

Nepotism, favoritism are so important. Everyone works hard and smart else they get thrown out : its not a Govt job anyway. Only those who butter/belong to same caste/ same community / same state or at least those who drink / smoke with the boss : get promoted easily. Others have it hard.

Maturity, problem-solving skills, on top of plain hard work, and whatever Mr. Virag Shah explained are the ingredients for promotion in private job! Whatever said and done, those who cry for milk will get it - association with top officials matter the most in private organisations. If you do some little personal chores for the family members of your bosses, all the above requirements would be overlooked!

Sadly this is the truth today ! You need a godfather to move up the corporate ladder. Hardwork and sincerety doesnt pay much today. Its connections and more connections that works today in not just the private sector but also in the govt.

Good work must be seen and rewarded without the need for 'beating your own drum'. Unfortunately, the management in most companies is too stupid to see the work done by the actual contributors. Their thought process is clouded by constant consumption of alcohol. Such lowly managers cannot take decision about the work done by their teem members. The very need to project work shows one of the two : 1. Either work done was ordinary or 2. Management consists of dogs.

Agree Kiran, Please allow me to rephrase. Actually, only hard-work is like mechanized performance while Association with Top Officials does not mean flattering stand only. In fact, performance with people management is what is always favored to be considered as criteria for promotion in Private Job. I have some real examples where the person in question had never paid extra attention to win "Extra" association with seniors. However, he was good at delivery as well as deft in Client relation maintenance. He's always been awarded generously. Hence, I can say without any hitch that Hard-Work along with People Management Skills are what needed to excel in Private Jobs. There isn't any requirement of maintaining Association with Top Officials. Thanks.

Balance in hard work and good relation with the boss lead to a successful team which bounce back to you as rewards. In fact, good peoples keep good relation with every body. There are few who succeed only in association with boss but ultimately team work fails and the person suffers.

All the people on the left either seem to be newly employed (less than 2 years of experience) or are the ones involved in the Appraisal process of an employee. And I really want to smile at that fact :). It is not just Buttering that works these days, many a times if you are really a hard worker and are a Key employee then you need to threaten (resign) as well. And then all you want is fulfilled. Everything said above is a personal experience and experience of close acquaintances. And I would just like to mention that I didn't threaten...but simply left such places. Looks like I might need to do something soon with where I am right now, because my hard work has stopped paying and the management thinks that's my usual self and not something different that I did that I should get a good bonus. Can't imagine how stupid some people can get.
