A blend of both will be great nothing can be achieved without performance and good relations can be added advantages. But only good relations with top management will take you no where. Afterall they want to get the work done. They are not running a charity.

Performance rather good performance at work place is no longer an isolated effort , a good manager always links his project to organisational goals . For this he has to interact with management at top which needs to be done at satisfactory levels. Both attributes are important and go hand in hand. But i must say that good relation with top management with out good performance on primary functions, will take us nowhere in private jobs.

Performing seriously and consistently will take you nowhere unless and untill you have good relations with top management.

Unsupportive top management and good performance can give you stability at your work organisation not good increment or position.

The practice is different in different places and in case of different genders. Somewhere a specific gender take the advantage by virtue of good relation, somewhere real performers get the edge. The perfect answer is 50:50 in my opinion.

There is no substitute to hardwork and it is recognised even if at a later date. Performance pays while good relations stays good while the management is in control if it changes you better look a job change.
