F&B, Silver Service, Personnel and FACILITIES are the reason for an institution like a Hotel to attain a STAR status!! Depending on the number of F&B outlets, SPA, Business and Conferencing and Silver Services the ratings of a 3 or 4 or 5 or 5 star deluxe are offered to that institution. Hotels are looked upon as a HOME AWAY FROM HOME!! According to me and as Mr. Dhaliwal has rightly pointed out, a hotel has to project itself as an opulent, extraordinary place for you to stay in! It has to substitute your logic of HOME. So the hotels generally have to up their standards of COMFORT by way of Air Conditioning, lights and general razz matazz by way of chandeliers, gangway lighting, Pool lighting, SPA, HEALTH CLUB, RESTAURANTS, BUSINESS FACILITIES etc. These need to be lit with a very WARM ambience and hence a lot of yellow lighting in used. This is the core area of service where the hotal spends alot. Electricity!! use of CFL lights and other sources of energy saving lighting should be [racticed. That is the most essential cost saving that can be done!!

In my view the pay roll cost is always higher than the Electricity Bill or the cumiliative energy cost. The man power augmentation in any standard 5 star hotel is either 1.5 ( minimum ) times or more towards the no. of rooms as per the specific brand standard. The industry norm today in India on an average the energy cost is about 9 to 11 % of the total revenue where as the payroll cost is about 15 to 18 % of the total payroll cost. The above are just indicative only to add fuel to the debate. I would also like to point out that all the hotels chains, be it Indian or International are now in a spree to reduce the energy cost to atleast upto 4 % per year. Now in 5 years time that about 20% of the initial energy cost. I just wonder in cases of comparetivly newer hotels this may prove the consultants designing the facilities may not have done their job properly or it is a year old practise of Hospitality brotherhood to creat unnecessary pressure on the Engineers to produce impossible results as they think all other departments' expenditures are logical and just. Points are also to be pondered if in 5 years time some newer practise and technology are into the market why the same are not adopted in the inception or atleast kept provisions in the way hardware and finance. It is also to be thought how justified it is to scrap systems/equipments within 5 years life span and encourage the new FF & E purchase. The all above are only the points to ponder and I invite suggestions.

in my opinion wages & salaries bill is also a very high cost for the hospitality industry. To give the best of service to the customers it is imperative that the best manpower is employed and retained. Apart from their salaries , the cost of training, welfare and other related expenses is also to be taken care of. So i feel this cost may exceed the energy cost. suniel arora hospitality consultant

In my view, comfort and beauty will top the list. People get attracted to different hotels because of their beauty first. People prefer better spot hotels for holidays so I believe, the more attractive we can make the hotel, the more people will get attracted. It needs lot of maintenance thus would need lot of expenditure.
