Costliest advertisements also  can  provoke the consumer only once to buy.But his second buy is depending on its quality. Maximum selebrities are not using their branded product at all. They come in their advertisement only to earn money that's all!!!

So in my view quality only the THING that provoke the consumer to buy it again and again.

Undoubtedly " Quality " ... marketing strategies, brand ambassadors etc may trigger a person to buy but he/she may not fall for it after that unless there is standardization and quality ...

Quality is most important, aspects of any sort of product. customer always look for quality, before buying, adversitment might give a littlbe of push to a brand or a sku, therefore it is only a quality of products which will make a sku to brand, and to maint that brand share in market advertisement is required.

Surely it is the quality which sustains the products, but other factors like brand, advertisement for creating better awareness are  also equally  matters in a long run especially during the introduction of new products of different kind to the market by the same producer, ex: TATA- Automobile-Cosmetics, ITC- Cigarettes - Food Products where the brand speaks before the quality [but still the quality rules the sustainability of the products]

according to me all three are very necessary

brand

it defines u and yr company and also states no one else than u owns it

advertisement

it is for the peoples to know about yr product and helps u sale it once even without their intentions.

quality

it helps u (when a customer uses it and finds better than he was using) then he would be coming to u again for each and every thing u produce according to yr needs

I think at base level quality is prefer. If you have quality evrything comes by own.Advertisement is the next to quality,it will increase the level of popularity of product. But if u have quality nothing is needed to make it popular tody evry one need perfectness.

Product can become popular only when it has the PERFECT QUALITY. But before a product is launched there shold be some news regarding so and so product through an ADVERTISEMENT so that people can access it . Heavy investments on advertising and later if the quality is low ,EVEN a major brand cannot save it from falling..... So QUALITY always first.

I beleive that quality is the foremost thing people look fo these days.  Due to the growing population between the age 18-35 where people are more educated and are more inclined towards quality rather then the price.

However Selling/marketing also plays an important roles as till the time the consumer is not aware of the quality of the product he may not be able to buy it.

For example there is a fruit juice which helps to reduce your fat.. now just by introducing it in the market will not be able to grab customers.

A consumer before buying the product checks if it bought by someone or may be would check irs review online, it may not be coming in the eyes of the consumer till the marketing of the product has been done properly

Precisely quality is the main element behind a successful product. Say for example few companies have done good branding and advertisement if quality is not up to the mark we don't use it. Example windows vista...its a product but its irk some to use it...customer pay for the value which they add to their business

Quality Lasts Forever, and eventually the customers is happy and forgets the higher price he paid for a quality product.

Quality leads to trust, and trust leads to building a Brand's Value for long-term interests.

The concept of buying a particular Brand is the notion of the trust that the Brand enjoys.

In case the product is of inferior quality one can be sure that this particular Brand will not attract repetitive sales atall, they might as well close shop.

I strongly agree with the words of Bellala. Quality is the major factor which upholds the demand of the product at any period of time. A product with low quality is equal to a theatre with a few people watching a film inside it. Eventhough brand also plays a leading factor for a product it just attracts the people to buy the product quickly without enquiring the quality of the product at the first place. Then the other key factor which relates to a product is its price. Here in this case if the product has a standard quality and it has a more than average price, people would defenitely go for it because of its quality.

I would say that brand, price, advertisement etc. plays many roles in the cycle of a product but quality is the major key factor which makes a product to rule as a king.

A consumer is always looking at value for money, which is quality. This is true across all sections of society. It is always the best quality at an affordable price. When it comes to brands, it is again the best quality across brands and as Mr. Rao has stated advertisement influence, will die after experiencing the product. If the quality is good, it'll survive. Do introspect, don't we all want to buy the best of which we can afford. Once a consumer experiences quality, he will never be influenced by advertisements or brand. Therefore, popularity of any product, in the long run, will solely depend on it's quality.

Let me give you example of Brand "AMWAY" . Amway shares very good market shares in FMCG. Without any advertisements/publicities. Pure Marketing strategy of CHAIN system. Just because of the QUALITY Value of its products, even all are expensive. Another Brand - Tupperware - virgin plastic products, life time gurantee- No ADs, No publicity.

These Brand stands for its Quality & value they provide to consumers.

Will "U" buy a product second time if you are NOT happy with it or "U" will suggest some one to buy it?
I know the answer "NO" ,so why is it? OTHERS parameters play important roles to stand, enter or introduce a product but not for SUSTAINABLE stand if Brand do not offer Quality, Value & promises which made in ADs.

Brand does not exist without a first. brands do not come into place overnight. It takes years of sustained quality products being posted in the market. You take any real life case and test this argument. Even the best of the brands fails if the product is not good. You should read my last statement in my previous post. Also desist from personal attacks it is meaningless. stick to the point under question. simply saying that the other guy does not understand is not enough. Now the question is if you yourself know what you are asking.

if you really want to what makes a product popular: it is trust built over a period of time. Companies build trust by selling products that are acceptable by consumers. Advertisement is a tool that helps companies tell its customers the attributes of the product. Brand is an image in the minds of people that represents reliability supported by performance. Every product from a company is thoroughly scrutinised by consumers for utility against the money they pay to accquire the product. Hence I think sustained quality backed by a proven track record makes a product click in the market.

I would go with Mr.Shyam on this .People now-a-days are more influenced by the brand rather than quality, they just want to feel good or show others that they have a branded product whether it is of high quality or not.But in the long term a product only survives because of its quality rather than anything else.

Mr. RadhaKrishnan i would also say that there is no replacement for quality irrespective of how intensively you market the product because at the end of the day consumers will only buy the product if they realize the value for money.

But What about companies who are now focussing more on making the product a brand with their innovative marketing strategies. will they be succes ful.

what do you say?

Quality is what I look for in a product. A product with bad quality means no product is available. If I was given an opportunity to use that product free of cost, I won't accept it. Why go for the product which you don't like.

A product bad in quality but advertisement says its better than any other product. Will you believe the ad ? Will you go for it ?

The quality is the base for a Brand, popularity of a product. But just quality is not enough to make the product popular. It needs proper marketing, exposure of quality, which comes from Advertisement.

Quality, Advertising and correct placement of product in the market makes the product popular.

This is a double barreled question !! First of all, clear your thought before stating these terms Quality,Advert,Brand (no offence meant). Brand is itself a broad term used in marketing.A Brand is quite simply a promise, which takes years to build & nourish into something that customers come to believe. When I'm saying promise, I mean the word. It consisits of promises in terms of Trust,Quality, benefits & ofcourse belongingness. Advertisement could be one of the media to convey your message to your target audience. Any product could not be brand. So please don't raise double barreled question in debate(no pun intended).

Most brand , I mean very popular brands are mostly useless products qualitywise.

The best example to date is "Nirma" soaps , detergents etc.

Anyone who has used it once will vouch for its worst quality n skin irritations n sores also in some cases. But the brand beat the best ever products of the category into "NOWHERE" STATUS and the soap industry went fora toss overnight n had to compromise many things just to survive the onslaught of Nirma. But finally the quality has to take over n the consumer is NO FOLL ALWAYS. BUT OUR INDIAN MENTALITY TO GET ATTRACTED TOWARDS ADS THAN THE QUALITY OF PRODUCT IS SOMETHING WHICH CAN NEVER BE CHANGED FOR THOUSANDS OF GENERATIONS, I FEEEL.

Where it comes for the intangible products it could be the advertisement.

What is brand??? What does it consist ? What is the core value of that brand ??? First we need to understand this.A brand is a 'PROMISE' to the consumers. As long as the 'PROMISE' is delivered the consumer will trust the brand and do business with the brand. The promise can be related to product  quality, service, technology etc.You can't make a false promise to the consumer and get away for long.At the point when you are fulfilling the 'promise' you need to differentiate your 'promise' .Then advertisement takes over of creating a certain image in the consumer's mind.Fulfilling the promise does not mean that you have to be the best .You just need to do what you say.If Big Bazaar says that it is 'Sabse sasta and Accha' then it has to consistently deliver on that promise. So the bottom line is you need to deliver the promise to make your brand popular

Quality SUSTAINS the consumer!

Quality engages the consumer for longer time! But to understand the term QUALITY the consumer needs to LOOK at your product FIRST. So to attract the consumer to LOOK at it, your communication needs to REACH him. After he is enticed will he TRY the product!

Once tried the consumer can be tempted to try again if and only if the QUALITY is upto the mark!

Quality comes after usage of the brand!! What the ads scream as attributes and other differentiators of the brand, the use of the product comes first. What needs to be understood here is how will you be tempted to buy the product for its first use?? Its all about your positioning, proposition and of course visual salivation that your ads can cause!! So, if the brand has been able to break thorugh your emotional quotient, I guess its hardly anytime for the product to be popular!!

Guys

Most of u have put down the attributes very nicely. Just like to add my 2 cent opion in this.

For a consumer , who is looking at a product he will prefer everything is important.

But when it come to selling a product in the market, many things come into play. My vote goes for others, though i personally belive Quality as driving factor, but the research and analysis what I see in my market research, the Others play a important role.

Let me justify why?

Take e.g.

e.g. 1

Coco-Cola & Pespi, we know both are having good quality, but what is driving the sales of the product

e.g. 2

If a consumer wants to buy a product , let say a A/C he will go to a retailer showroom. Now apart from quality what is the driving factor, we know it now purerly the sales person job how he pushs the product of which company, it will influence the consumer mind (not always but mostly, the research says...)

e.g. 3 Wal-Mart

Most sucessfule retailer , which all agrees, does it sell the product just by quality, then u are wrong, as most of the products are made in china, the driving factor there is price....

So, yes quality is driving point, but again the focus will be PRoduct/Industry/Region/Price which will decide whether Quality plays the role or not.

But if I am planning to buy a valuable/costly/critical item then as Quality will be in the mindset. But else it will be in back end...

Ok Mr.Varadarajan please let me know Mother Brand of following as an example:

Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Videocon, Philips, Nike, Reebok...ETC

Please read my note in previous statement its all you are saying & just beating around the bush...Mr.Varadarajan, People & Management who do not accept facts lead their business to no where...Now here i'll say one more thing:

"The Best Leadership tries to effect mass by giving statements which are accepted & understood by majority"

I up to certain point agree with  Mr.R Varadarajan but there is again a big but he's also not getting the point what the question asks for. He's making simple things look complex. I want to ask him what is trust & Brand Name, reliability supported by performance & Quality. I don't think so he knows the difference. He's roaming all around, not coming to the main point; I have a feeling that Mr.Varadarajan is from Mechanical Background. If u have Bad Brand Name people will not trust u while on the other hand Good Brand Name will give more customers & even potential customers will trust u. Reliability Supported by Performance is itself a description of Quality, If bad quality, reliability in performance cann't be guaranteed & vice versa...So, again its Brand Name which wins the credit of making a Product Popular...

*Note:When a Brand is launched it develops Trust in due course of time by "Effective Advertisement & by giving acceptable Quality" for The Targeted Group & Trust results in form of Goodwill, which is the Measured Value of a Brand...

I read many arguments but as i stated earlier is the only right answer.I think people here are just not getting the right meaning of popularity. It means how many people know 'bout that particular thing in good or bad way but should be there in mind & mouth of customers, if its bad the business will go down in time to come & if its good business will go to boom.Quality is the survival factor, here price plays an important role.If quality is ok with effective advertisement & good brand name with competitive price people will go for that product,e.g. Parle G Biscuits-People buy it coz its not only inexpensive but has a brand name of Parle with wide spread presence in the market by effective 'n efficient means of advertisement of a targeted group.Quality & Advertisement helps in building a brand name while brand name is what makes a product widely accepted & acceptance by majority is its level of popularity & vice versa...Hence Brand name is the main reason & cause for the popularity of a Product ultimately...

*Note:Quality & demand for how much percent of quality differs from product to product & person 2 person...Quality is the percentage of accuracy !!!

I belive it is brand is what first impress to customers,

example MAGGI as a brand no customer would like to test first with the quality, the brand & Adveristment what attracts customers to purchase the product,

the best example is MAGGI Bhono Masala,  before the products launches the demand was on such a extent that customers were calling, writing to me.

I belive that brand & adveristment is what push customer to buy  first time & second comes the quality

if the quality is good then regular sales will take place.

People preferably go by Brand they hardly know about evaluation for quality. They are mislead by grade for comparison of quality.

Manufacturing company or Service provider look for quality for reducing the risk of compensation and improving profitability.

Advertisement and brand is what makes a product popular. Consider a product with high quality and which is not attached to any popular brand name and no advertisment is done. Then will that product sell  ?, I dont think so. If advertisment is done, the product becomes noticable and therefore popular...

What we r missing in this debate is the buying capacity of consumers. To sustain quality one cannot compromise on substandard or average materials for production and as a result the product doesnt reaches out to the masses but to a selected class as quality products are expencive. So the brand and advertisements becomes very essential to sell a product successfully in market even if it doesnt complies with the specified standard of that particular product.

It is nothing but advertisement in the form of word of mouth which decides the popularity of a product for example Harry Potter was purchased by even people who did not knew what it wasa wether a book or cd.Another example is the launch of Ariel in India.

Although all three factors are responsible for success of any business in the long run, as far here is concerned - in this tough competition quality has to be the essence of any business to servive what makes a brand popular is its wide spread presence in the market and its only possible when people demand for it and demand is created by the awareness of the brand in the mind of prospects and is backed by effective advertisement of the product...altogether its a good question...its how we look into things from different perspective and arrive to its conclusion taking all its positive and negative elements together...

Quality may sustain in the  long run, but, the product may not be there in the market to see what happens in future. Its logical. In this speed and developmental era and as every one is very busy as in the case of the people in the rapidly developed economies like India and China, consumers may not have time to look at the quality and they tend to assume that whatever is advertised tangibly, notably and well, is a good product. It depends on the product again. If, by its nature, the product can stand in the market for some time, then quality matters. But, if the product is of the group belonging to speed and swift change, then, the advertisement and the branding rules the entire thing.
