Hi Mohan, Appreciation may not always result in a promotion. But, Yes a series of them will definitely compell the employer to consider one for you. In fact "Appreciation in any case is very good. It makes what belongs to other belong to you as well." It symbiotic and contagious both. Thanks

HI , I think you should be reconciling on this view. Actually no view is correct or wrong. It is just the perception that matters. Looking at various angles and views definitely makes a change in the perception. Bye.

If certificates were to considered just pieces of scrap paper, so does the same go for the educational ones we strive for. Infact a salary hike can be a result of umpteen factors not excluding just the tenure. whereas the certificate actually vouches your talent in a particular domain. Money cannot in any case be the primary motive of any employee. It is the result of efforts that are payed off appropriately. "So no efforts no money." I remember Gandhiji saying" If you have the goal, the means will automatically follow."

Hike in salary surely motivates an employee but the more you stuff him with, the more he opens his palm in front of his boss and demands "Yeh Dil Maange More". But you give him that piece of paper just once and he keeps his mouth shut. Why? Because he knows at the back of his mind that just one piece of paper will fetch him enough calls with higher package and moreover pieces of paper are not guaranteed twice. Thats why it rains money and not appreciations. Training Certificates can be given once that can be useful when one job hops but no fool will ask for more training certificates.Treasure that piece of paper and you are free to go anywhere in the world.

Well one is a motivator & the other is hygiene factor........ It all deoends on the nature of job & one's attitude towards job. Both are equally important but sometimes recognition in terms of award / certificate do wonders

In my personal view when anyone encourage us in the form of certificate or something else on the basis of our good work, it is far better than comparison to hike in salary. Its also true that hike in salary is a another good motivational factor but not better than certificate or our encouragement. Its also depend on person's view how they satisfied ( on the basis of salary hike or certification of their achievment ). Salary hike is not surly show your quality and performance , but your certificate, acheivements and encouragements show your talent every where.

Actually any sincere and hardworking employee craves for recognition of his/her talent which may come up to him/her as even a mere pat in back or a few mouth-spoken words if not a printed certificate

Though salary is the prime motivation, Its not everything. circumstantially salary hike can be regarded as the major recognition for your work. But, if we dont have any importance for our existence in the company, then salary hike is a mere gain. Thus, in my view, a sense of appreciation, feeling important in the company and having a great due respect with regard to our work is a major motivation.

It is very difficult to say because what may motivate one may not motivate the other. If money is not what I am looking for and self actualization is my need then a piece of paper is going to be my motivational tool.

Hi jaydeep, True!! If you are referring to an appreciation as an accomplishment in one domain expertise, then one should forward to getting cross trained in other domains as well. That would make him a good Manager.

motivation of employee means delegating more responsibility in order to mean that he/she is capable of doing things and promote to the next level. therefore, next level refers to promotion in both salary and position. if it is mearly position promotion, only up to certain limit people will accept, beyond its always the salary hike...........

Undoubtedly, if these two are the options, hike in salary works wonders as it is directly proportional to the motivation levels. But if the piece of paper along with appreciation offers job enrichment, i feel an employee would prefer it over hike in salary. As today reports suggest that people leave jobs not because of salaries but because they need enriching and challenging jobs.

Indeed salary is one of the main factors which accounts for the acknowledging the worth of person. However, when a person reaches at the peak of hike the factors like rewarding with appropriate certificate does motivate a person. Consider a situation where a soldier fights a battle and earns a Param Vir Chakra; or a Civilian earns Padma Vibhushan can there be any substitution by way of financial rewards. Even in case of corporates, a person who is already a president and accordingly drawing salary and if there is marginal increase in salary but the status is somewhat decreased by parting some responsibility. Can that person accept the hike in salary. Therefore it all depends on the occasion when hike in salary may be a motivating factor but there are other factors like appreciation/ certificate that would carry more weightage.

Obviously hike in salary what we will do with piece of paper what has so many pieces of paper (certificates) done which we have got at schools and colleges. Nobody even cares about it doesnt matter what you play in your school/college only academic how strong you are really matters. And above all at the end of the month what we want the piece of paper or the salary?

- From employee's point of view, every employee expects salary rise every year, irrespective of his good or bad performance.
- Those who have performed better will obviously expect better increments in salary
- In case employee is Promoted, which means he is pushed up the ladder or hierarchy, he obviously deserves more remuneration.
- In case company does not want to give increase in salary, then do not call it promotion, just call it 'Job Enrichment'
- Generally followed practice is,: in case of Promotion there is something called 'Promotion Increment' or 'Special Increment' plus certain Increased and Additional Allowances and Benefits become applicable due to elevation to higher level / grade.

The truth is that the only benchmark which exists is money.
Now, imagine that you give your employee the kind of promotion you have imagined for him. This guy will feel cheated.
Not only this, it will be difficult to convince his family members also that he has got promotion without hike.He may hide this also from his family and may pretend to spend more, so you are relatively putting a burden on his pocket by promotion him without hike.
Not only this, the peers will eventually come to know this, someday or the other. This will become a topic of mockery for him.
The guy will feel that this is a scheme of HR just to extract more work from me without paying me for the same. This will create a feeling of wrath in him.He will feel justified in being selfish and will carry a negative image of the company. This guy will use his new designation to join a new organization at a higher pay, which is an extremely prevalent trend.
He will carry this image with him for the company and will spread the word to others. From the long-term perspective, the cost of talent acquisition will increase as lesser people will be willing to join the organization in future because of negative employer branding.

rewarding to employees is always have a different trends in now days neither salary, nor certificate motivate the employee.... employee is motivated only by the value(differs to different employees) he/she get from the organization and then only give full performance when he/she feels that he/she really matters for the organization.. Here Value can be Respect,Salary,Bonus,Reward or just a piece of paper..i am with hike in salary,respect...So who motivates me???yes money and respect from the org... just like that it differs to different peoples.

Its the "satisfaction", not salary not the certificate - it depends on the individual and his/her condition. If you hike salary OR provide certificate it does not guarantee the consistency in the performance. SATISFACTION - Affection, courtesy and thankfulness shown to the employee by the employer. And, making him to feel safe and sound. Then you decide about salary and certificate because, these 2 are default that you have to give for any best performer.
