I really found this interesting article which was titled "What's better saving the world or Building another Facebook app??"

This was the question asked at the recent UC-Berkeley Hackathon, last weekend. Indeed, many teams succeeded in their mission. They built some amazing software: to provide server-side rendering of games, convert website mockups to HTML/CSS, create sophisticated playlists for Youtube videos, and to analyze Twitter streams. One team even built a gaming interface for a neural headset.

There were so many cool tools that the seven judges, who included representatives from Zynga, Facebook, Y-Combinator had a hard time picking a winner in each category. The exception was the “social good” category. There was only one team worthy of receiving this prize. The team built a system to enable villagers in developing countries to send SMSs to volunteers across the globe who provide emergency medical advice. But the Silicon Valley judges couldn’t see the value of this technology. Instead, the panel awarded the prize to a team that developed a polling technology for university classrooms and for conferences. The rationale for this decision? “Helping universities is a social good.”  Are we socially conscious enough while we are venturing into something...

Sumitraji, as far as argument is concerned, what you are projecting is on sound lines.  But, when it comes to the context, saving the world shall always be on the top of the agenda for anyone.  To fund for a cause, you need to be sound on financial terms.  Yes, I agree with this. But, saving the world need not be the responsibility of Bill Gates or some other successfull personalities, its everybody's responsibility.  Social Responsibility is a kind of strategy that meets the ethical standards.

I agree saving the world with the so called clean tech innovations or something which really helps people and things like that, but what market is currently looking at are applications which are cheap in terms of funding and which can create big impact.  Just imagine if Billgates would have right away started Bill gates foundation which does all the social work instead of  Microsoft as a company and windows as an operating system, he would not have succeeded but after he did that and now with so much money he is doing more of a social work and funding on things which helps people in developing nations, even when Mark zuckerberg is through with his facebook ambitions he can also do some really good charity with those Billions of dollars that he has got from so many people, I am not telling that one should not focus on social good innovations......For those with the passion and the resources, go save the world. For everyone else, start whatever you like and if you later decide saving the world is your thing, go for it. Don’t be guilted into throwing away a business or project because it’s not socially conscious enough.

Saving the World is more important. If the world is saved we can make many Facebook apps but without world no such apps will be of any importance

I can see lots of comments on support of Saving the World, but i can also clearly see that non can like that all comment mentioning saving the world, if you are in support of saving the world first thing is that you must have to lile that comment. Other things remains the same as you each commented.

offcourse saving the world is better option. there are hell lot of things needed to be focussed upon rather than only facebook and moreover fb is itself part of the world.

Saving the World. Yes. But how? Charity begins at home. Conserve every thing that you can do for yourself and your family around you. Conserve energy, grow plants, segregate organic waste, develop methods of vermiculture and organic composts and use that as manure, do not litter, take your vehicle when it is absolutely essential, otherwise use public transport, obey traffic rules, develop civic sense among children, youth, assist elders when warranted - these are some of the many issues you can take care in order to save the world!

I appreciate your idea sir. With due respect mam , there is no doubt that money is playing crucial role.But the context i want to focus is our contribution towards society.It is not only money by which you can save world.Bill Gates is funding India through his organization. but HAS THAT MONEY REACHED TO THE COMMON PEOPLE OF INDIA.Sadly, the money is used by our politicians for their own benefits.So the need of hour is to think together, work together apart from money we need to take some other responsibilities also.

This topic indeed need a through understanding of concept.I would agree with Saving the world. we don't need to be superman or someone like that.Even your single contribution can bring about change as an empty vessel can be filed by little drops.one another important thing is that to bring the change be the change.It will bring you happiness and energy to achieve your goal along with society upliftment.

Time stands testimony to so many instances & events where if each one of us at our levels & capacity did think in the right context of 'Saving the World' could have made so many unfortunate events avoidable. No offence meant, but I agree with Mr. Srinivas, this is on sound lines as far as the argument goes.

Hi Sumitra, I don't agree with you. Sighting Bill gates, He was actually into saving the world. He went on to provide Personal Computer which replaced the mighty main frames only available to bigges. Facebook applications are far from that. IT has no meaning if it couldn't focus the basic needs of mankind. Engineering at large is for saving the mankind right from the invention of wheel. I suggest to keep it simple and straight. Save the World if you can, its not about winning a prize. What say?

i m also with "facebook" but not fully support "facebook" b'coz there are so many bad things in facebook so if we want to launch a new application like this then we also need to put some securities & shelter on some portions

I agree with Another Facebook Kind of Application. Social networking sites can increase a person's circle of friends, they also can increase exposure to people with less than friendly intentions. And according to Internet Marketing prospective Social Networking help us to promote business by increasing your online visibility in terms of thousands of fresh visitors.

I am no superman dudes,

But yeah I have a humane heart, which do wants to save the world from the destructions abilities that humans have gifted to this world. 

But I guess, given the recent facebook addiction, I think it is a must, definitely  a must, before you set out to save the world, to first develop an application on facebook, which in some way would help to save the world, cause if no one will actually realize that you are saving the world and what fun is in saving the world, when you can not become a hero.

So develop a facebook app first, one small step for a man and a gaint leap for netkind :P and there am I the superman of .com basking in the glory of my app :P

Actually none of us can save the world. We can take a few insignificant steps to "save the world", though. The world will continue to move in a its own perfect way.

So do not try to 'save the world' for none of us can.

Yes, I definitely agree with Ms.Sumitra. One should achieve his own goal and then only think of social cause. The charity services have not strated in the early stages of any business man, it starts late in his journey after reaching a stagnation point. The great Yogi VEMANA has reached that stage only after enjoying his full life. To start a charity or to become a yogi one should excel or reach the peak level in his area of business/service/industry, then only he will realise that there is nothing beyond that point.
