The main problem in our modern day education is, everything depends on marks, grade and certificates. Students mug up answers, vomit them in question papers and forget. After that hardly anybody cares of whatever he has learnt. I think student should be stressed on application more than just learning. They should be given more and more case studies so that they can understand how to use these things in practical life and remember them forever. In primary section only, every students should face a psychology test which will decide which field they are interested into and they should be given proper guidance so that they can get expertise in those field. i.e, their specialisation should be based on their skills and interest not on the basis of the marks they get in their previous exams...

Education System is the most easily available way to disturb or manipulate a natural growth of a child and to lock the born talent /potential of any human being carrying super human attributes.

But situation becomes more drastic when whole society and world has taken a responsibility to cater their old philosophies and school of thoughts in the form of standard universities school and institutions.

I personally agree with thoughts of Mr. Anup Bagla, consultant and see life with its full natural independence, an independence even where the knowledge or thoughts of others are not borrowed.

Our current and old education system has already helped in depreciating the mental values of a any human being at inner level and has not been able to bring out the true, cool and calm minded living societies with a heart full of love, peace and happiness. Some thoughts i would like to share on this:

1. Parents since eternity are believing that they are the luck/life maker of a child and always feel that their best will give the child a best of living. Its happening and child, a would-be parents and be-holder of societies, continues the same thought chain. Let the Child feel and see the world with his her own eyes for first 7 years.

2. Schooling System may not be suitable for all kids due to their mental veracities. So an Open-House learning and living Institutions should be opened, where the should come in direct contact with all aspects of life and should see the life directly. I would like to give an eg of ' Shanti Niketan' founded by Sri Ravindra Nath Tagore for this.

3. Every Human being is full of his/her talent, let nature decide what one is capable of doing with his full of love devotion and interest.

4. No Disturbance-  Everybody learns from their own mistakes. One should not be objected or appreciated at all. Let them see life without any objection or appreciation and face the world with their own true senses.

5. Let a child feel responsible - Every elder fulfills his/her ego through kids/child. One should be given so much freedom of doing and living with his own understanding that even the worst of worst vis a vis best of best could be of his own.

6. Almost total western culture has adopted a free style of education for children. Let them decide what they with their own senses find best for them selves.

Every child learning well should be the ideal concept of present time school...

we all know that a child go to school to learn but do we know how well he/she is learning?

parents send their child school to learn but they exactly don't know how well their kid is leaning in the school because there is nothing in the school that shows exact learning level of their kid, i think in each school there should be a module to measure the learning level of a child and if the learning of a child is not good then there should also be a module to bring the learning up.   i am surprised to see education reports done by ASER - 08 which says only 41% children of std 8 can read std 2 text and when it talks about maths the results are more pathetic.

this is all because we don't have focus on learning of a child in school, all we focus on school is on teaching study material and doing our jobs.. a child who has difficulty in reading, writing and speaking is considered as a week and the child who can do all is considered is good.. but my question out here is do parents send their child to school to be tagged as good or week? or to learn and grow to be success in life?  do we have a solution for the children who is not doing good in academics? no there is no such mechanism in any school to bring that 'kid' up to the level of a 'good child', so in an ideal school there must be a mechanism or module which can give learning.

the other thing which i strongly believe that should to be there in ideal school is a module which can improve children to speak up.. many child don't speak because not that they don't want to speak or they cant speak but because they have not been introduced and taught how to speak or open a talk..

i think a school which will have more focus on learning will be a ideal school not only for school itself but also for the parents who will get their revenue back in the form of 'skilled child' .

I agree with Mr Prasad, the schools get into too much of a mugging mode, and the worst part is that all the mugging does not a smarter student make...

I am talking from personal experience, I come from a small town which had only a few schools, the top 3 were markedly different in their approach to teaching: One relied on extensive homework even in class XI and XII, the second relied on huge number of compulsory 'pre-boards', and the third just gave students freedom to do whatever they want, even attendance rules weren't all that strict for class XI & XII.

The result: Students of school 1 do learn a few things, but only pertaining to their board syllabus, they do reasonably well in board exams (80-90% scores), but garner hardly any admissions into IITs or even good Regional Engg or medical colleges.

School 2 gets great results in board exams (many got >90%), but their students actually didn't understand much, rather they were just 'board-exam-attuned'. Annual average - Zero admissions into any respectable professional colleges.

School 3 gets relatively average board results (mostly 70-80%), but on any year it sends an average of 5 guys to IIT, 15 to Regional Engg Colleges, and 20 or so into good (non-private) medical colleges..

So in my view, whatever students achieved in terms of getting into professional career paths was INSPITE of schools and not because of schools..

So in the above examples, the lesser of all evils was school 3 because it was just leaving them onto their own resources, the classes were indeed held but were not a hinderance or burden on students..

The ideal scenario would be where schools inculcate a sort of 'wow' factor into education, a small example would be : rather than teaching about capacitance in bookish terms, demonstrate the power of all that stored energy by unleashing it instantaneously to propel a metal piece in a Rail-Gun - that's sure to get any boy's attention and might coax a few into actually liking physics to the extent of wanting to explore it!!

Now some may say that this is undue focus on professional (read engg / Medical) education and single-minded goal of becoming an engineer or a doctor is not really very healthy.

I agree whole-heartedly to that, but the schools should provide career counseling from class X itself, and such counseling shouldn't just list out options for students, rather it ought to lay a well-defined path for students to pursue those varied careers-paths.
Also we should not forget that schools are preparatory phase for higher education and ultimately a spring-board towards a career and rewarding life-style of future.

Basically the teachers have to be exposed to real world professionals, to get a reality check on what theu are teaching and what's actually needed outside of the school...
Eg: Schools of CBSE board used to teach history of computer for 3 whole years, rambling on and on about Charles Babbage and MarkI/II/III etc etc.. It's such a horrible waste of time..
If a computer teacher of class V interacts with a real software engineer, the teacher would realize the futility of undue focus on 'History and evolution of Computers'. History is good as it gives the background but cover it in a week and move on to more fun and learning activities..

So to summarize, best school should have:

  1. Framework to inculcate a yearning for knowledge in students, introduce them to joy of reading
  2. Not burden them with homework, rather excite them with glimpses of possibilities and nudge them on a treasure hunt of knowledge.
  3. Don't make them cram, make them understand what they should know and why it is important to know what they are being taught.
  4. Don't focus on exams, grades or boards - focus on making them smarter and sharper
  5. Don't push them onto rat race of engg/medical etc, rather lay out the options, let them make a choice and then provide solid guidance path.

Dear Raziuddin K M:

Please refer my post (Insight)

Excerpts ...

All education is finding one's own real center...true nature i.e., to be able to live happy, active, purposeful life, actualizing one's own gifted talents. This requires, identifying one's inherent potentialities. And this in turn requires, uncovering, developing them, if they are hidden or latent from consciousness. Life is nothing, but series (or line or chain) of possibilities...

This is the basic issue of dealing with Life.  .........................................................

Therefore, we have to live in harmony, peace, and effectiveness. This means producing results, bringing harmony in disharmony by relating better with both inside and outside possibilities and integrate them wherever required.

This is the crux of whole education...as un foldment, expansion, up liftment and reaching a cent-percent self-actualization, wholesomeness growth development in harmony as well as progress, prosperity in material (worldly) terms by enriching our and other's lives by removing and being free of lack, poverty, fear and dependence of any and every type.

We have to be open to our feelings-intuitions, inner dreams-desire...drives, wishes, interests-Aptitudes...visions etc. Instead of, learning by rote (text book-learning), utilization of potentials and inner- latent talent, possibilities should take place leading to rightful living, concentration and developing wisdom & creativity.

.................................................................................................................

Every individual is full of possibilities, potentials, unique to itself. We have to start with this premises ( assumption ) / base. He has to find out his own unique qualities, specialities (strength and weaknesses) and relate to his immediate surroundings.

Whole exercise boils down to the integration, relation / interaction of the self - sharply, profiled specialty profile (developed to generate social specialization & attractiveness) to something other than self (i.e., foreign) - i.e., surroundings or environment and neighborhood Universe. The options, opportunities, problems in the surroundings look for solutions and needs - necessities and unfulfilled tensions conditions look for balance, neutralization and harmony as well as satisfaction and equilibrium. .........................................................................

There should be frequent change in the syllabus ie to catch with the actual world. The upgrading of syllabus should start with teachers, first treachers are trained for the new upgrade so that they inturn transfer the new upgrade to the students 100% without any doubts. Whenever the syllabus is changed the teachers themselves will lot of doubts, which will inturn create doubts in the minds of students. The present day education should give importance to practical applications also along with theoritical studies.  Otherwise our education system is good and the encouraging the skillset depending on the student interst have to after high school and it will be too early for the students to arrive at particular interst at primary school level.
