For a  large scale project, Micro and detail manage I will use Excel.

well i do support MS Project as compared to MS excel.MS Project is far better that excel for monitring. In excel u can use tenmplate and make some program for calculation but MS Project have all inbult U can have Gant Chart and plan the project and fix targets and insert resources in project plan so nocpmarision in excel and MS Project for Project planning and monitoring.

MS project is a good tool, infact we should no how to utilize this.. It is having all functional and operational facilities which are linked in much better way as compared to Excel..

IN excel you have to build relationship between veriables and have to take care of in entire sheet... for one project it becomes cumbersome...

Whereas in MS project... standard relationship is drawn already which can be used all the time... for mulit projects even can co-relate the variables and resources accordingly....fantastic features all the time available and can be customized with little efforts.

As a project manager, I prefer MS-Project. It helps me in developing plans, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing budgets and analyzing workloads.
