Consider you have huge acears of land, their you can produce either bio fuel crops or food. What will you produce ??

What should we produce more. Is it Bio Fuel crop or Food crops ???

I cant understand why people are getting scared that bifuel crops are replacing food crops.Food crops are obviously of prime importance for survival of all mankind and even animals.But.....food crops are and can not grown in all fields.

On the other hand Biofuel crops can be grown in wastelands and also on boundaries of the acres and acres of land. This will not only provide dual profit to the grower but also he can earn carbon credits along with pollution free environment.

I personally feel that its no use of producing bio fuels crops, it will do harm the environment sir. If you have acears of land and you might cut down trees for the sake of producing more and more bio fuels crops. Then what will be the end result? Pollution, deforestation and finally global warming. Also if you have land produce food, people are dying for it.

All world are running around fossil fuel and our country huge import this fossil fuel fuel is very necessary to improve our economy & lifestyle . every  things are directly or indirectly depend on fuel. in our country many state have electricity problem . in my opinion through by Bio fuel we can solve this problem .

Much of this debate was fabricated by the Grocery Manufacturers of America who have spent over $300M in their smear campaign.  Unfortunately, the media perpetuates this and all bad news.  Today's biofuels are not tomorrow's biofuels.  We are just getting started, so it is very premature to make any kind of projections.  Corn, sugarcane, soybeans and rapeseed are probably not the answer for our future, but neither is petroleum.  Petroleum is so pervasive that we will need many sources of energy to replace it, not just biofuels.  We need biofuel feedstocks that in no way disrupt food sources.  Just because we have not figured this out yet is no reason to throw up your hands and call it impossible.

Surely Both ! but Need to consider the situations and do wisely . As the coexistennace of both is very much needed ,It must be in the limit not to  make the food supplies costly or agriculture land .

The International Energy Agency (IEA) plays the role of energy policy advisor to 27 member countries on issues related to providing "reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens". The IEA website posted a recent statement on the agency's views on the impacts of biofuels on food/energy security, economic development and reduction of greenhouse gases, as well as the importance of sustainable biofuels production.

Among the highlights of the statement are:

 (1) Biofuels production using "first generation feedstocks" (such as grains for ethanol and oil seeds for biodiesel) may compete with food, feed and fiber production, although "currently less than 2% of global agricultural cropland is used for biofuels production".

(2) Biofuels produced from "second generation feedstocks" (lignocellulosic biomass, such as woody biomass and vegetative grasses) have "considerable promise for eventually providing more sustainable types of biofuels; however, support for research and development is important in order to lower production cost.

(3) Ethanol production from sugarcane produced in tropical or subtropical countries like Brazil, Southern Africa, and India is a good example of properly managed production of sustainable biofuels ("excellent characteristics in terms of economics, carbon dioxide reduction and low land use requirements").

(4) Biofuels are becoming increasingly important in meeting the global demand for transport fuel;  in 2008, an estimated 55% of the growth in non-OPEC oil supply can be attributed to biofuels.

Very true, Beena;

If we see the yield of bio fuel it is substantial and almost 80 to 85%, means small land can produce lot of bio fuel crops. Deserted area can be utilized.

So it will not unbalance the crop mix, people can get both bio fuel crop and food crops as well.

i completely agree with Beena here....why everyone is talking like biofuel crops will replace the food crops...no way it will replace them...as food crops are the priority and as Beena has said...it can be grown on wastelands and near the boundaries..where one can increase the income with both food crops and biofuel plants.....i want to ask here the users like if somebody would give examples of biofuel crops...it would be great....thanks

Ofcourse bio fuel. Its the time for every one of us to go in for fuel that pollutes less. The crude oil or the non renewable sources of energy is the major cause for global warming as majority of industry and automobiles use this fuel to power itself. Bio fuel can save our environment from global warming. Its the time to concentrate on bio fuel, so produce more bio fuels crops / bio fuels.

Prefer food. Where food crops can not be grown go for bio fuels.

FOOD ofcourse..!

Bio fuels are not going to help much as Mr. Vineet said.. We are consuming fertilizers more and more everyday, just because farmers fails to cater the requirements of metro cities. The concept of Organic food comes into role! First we should eat healthy, it's a basic requirement..

HYBRIDS on other hand is a better substitute than Bio fuel concept..

Our cultiveted land is decreasing on the cost of SEZ,industrilisation, housing plans etc.Now we are compeled to talk about food security as due to uncertain mansoon change in climate low ground water lever our food grain production decreasing. on the other hand we can think of producing such crops which will give food with bio fuel also.rise husk, straw ,husk of maize are used as fuel for FBC (fludidised bed combustion) boilers.so both food with fuel can be produced.

I feel we need to change our agricultural pattern.  Large Scale and cooperative agriculture should be undertaken.  A beautiful example is the Dairy revolution at Anand.  If dairying can become cooperative, why not agriculture.  We can have an agricultural land depository and agriculture then can be better planned.

When it comes to power generation, one major resource we are wasting is the water.  We suffer when drought occurs.  We suffer when rain causes floods.  Interlinking of rivers can solve these two major problems.  We should not allow politicisation of the initiative.

Once these two take place, we can then conduct a survey where shortfall lies and take action.  If we should grow bio fuel crops and our food security is in place, why not?  Instead if food security is threatened, stoping bio fuel would then be a knowledgeable decision.

I agree with Vineet Prakash that if we have land why bother to produce biofuel. The quality fertile land should be used for producing food and not biofuel. One should realize that the world is facing food shortage...food crisis....So why plant biofuel when you can plant food ?
