Productivity & quality are two sides of the same coin.. Only at a very basic level do you have to trade off one to get the other.. at a smart level you get both at the same time !.. and by the way also safety and a bunch of other positive things. So,Which one will you choose Productivity or Quality or Both.

I think that both terms can be characterized as ABSOLUTE and COMPARATIVE. It is costly and wasteful to seek the ABSOLUTE level (unless it is medicine or education). COMPARATIVE means both benchmarking competition and benchmarking where you were yesterday, if you pursue Continuous Improvement. Operations and Sales may espouse productivity and Marketing and Management may focus on quality.

The approach you need to take is make an acceptable or competitive product or service, then improve the productivity, then improve the quality, and keep progressing either alternately or jointly while management guides and communicates the bottom line.

What do you say guys?

I feel there is no reason to sacrifice either productivity or quality for the other. Properly designed systems take both into account.Quality leads to production. With quality production valuable raw material is optimized and not wasted. We have learned that by improving (simplifying, fool proofing, documenting, etc) the process, both quality and productivity will increase. You should not have one with out the other. There is no choice: good companies all over the world improve both at the same time.

Both productivity & quality are compliment to each other . If you cannot make quality product then your productivity is of no use rather wastage of all kind of resource. So , both are important but at the same time my inclination towards quality is more by a few percentage point.

Productivity is both Production and Quality. Production without quality is waste. As per theory productivity is production along with requisite quality.

The Solution Of Any Answer Is Dependant On The Working Situation of That Person. No One Can Support The Productivity At The Start Stage. AS We All Are From Design Dept. We Have To Think About Quality. The Productivity Can Be Increase By Improvement In Process, By Kaizens, Brain Storming & Many Other Ways.

I Am Always Support The Quality First Then Productivity & For MAintain Quality The Design Of Process, Relative Fixture, Specifications & Standards Is Must??????????

Did You Agree??????????

Obviously you can have both, these terms does not have a unit but are individual perception, but say I want to improve quality of a product then it is for sure its productivity is going to decrease untill I update my workforce and/or equipments. So it depends on the company vision and the manager what he chooses. He has to find an optimized balance compromising a little of both.

Guys

This depends to whom u are asking the questions. If u are going to ask the end consumer or uses, for them the answer is quality. Because they want a quality product/services for the price they pay.

But if u ask the management of the company the questions, the quality of the product leads to more sales and revenue and creates a brand factor or wow factor around the product , which is very important as it acts as differentiator.

But if u ask the management the same questions but from profit or P/L stand point, they need to give a quality product at right price. So to get the right price the productivity plays a important role, as we mature in the life cycle and grow each quarter, we need to increase the level of productivity for the given product, then only we can give a comparative price for the given quality.

Bottom Line: From high level - Productivity must for reducing the cost/expense and learning from mistakes, etc...

Quality must for generating for revenues

For Managers managing the P/L of the product but comes to the picture - Higher Revenue at lesser cost

(Quality and keep improving the productivity level).

Improving the productivity level - automation, better work process, educating the employees, training, IT systems (MRP, ERP, etc...), Modern machinery, Better controls (Audit checks, quality process flow), etc....

According to me ,we have to work on Quality as compared to productivity,If we focused on quality,we will able to decrease the cost.If we have better quality & lower price,we can expand our market ,stay in business and provide more job opportunities & it will enhance productivity.

Sanjit almost everyone will answer this question with a "gut reaction." They will say that it presents a false dichotomy and that you need both.

However, this isn't always true. While having both is the "norm" there are always exceptions which prove the rule; and here they are.

1. If you have goods that are by design "lower quality/lower cost" [cheap novelty items, low-end disposables, etc], one would want higher productivity (efficiencies) to meet meet demand and/or profitability targets.

2. If you have extremely high quality goods that command a premium in the marketplace, one could accept lower productivity since the premium would offset the cost of lower productivity.

Hope this helps Sanjit

Ther is no question of productivity or quality ... person like manager or engineer or enterprenuer will go for both .... no bady wants to compromise with ourselves and at customer end. We want both, customer want quality hence both option is important. Production and quality not the two sides of coins where you have to select one.... these are at the same side of coin and other side of the coin is CUSTOMER .... which is having more weight as compared to others so customer is at the top means quality at the top ... and our business need more production hence both run parallel....TOPIC is not relevent or not communicated or planned properly... or I may be wrong.... Topic must be which is important either production or quality ....

I am also agree with you because Productivity is must with only quality. We see it that in the favour of productivity we reject the quality it is not good nature so i want to say that with productivity also effort quality then we can stay in line.

There is no reason why we maintain any one of the two elements. To survive in the industry one should have to produce requisite quantities with best quality.

Productivity may vary company to company but quality is only standard which each & every company should maintain. As far as productivity is concerned it more depend on our inputs, people, process. But at the same time if you want qualitative products you should concentrate on above stated factors which affect both quality & quantity. So, it is important to produce qualitative products as well as quantitative.

I think at base level quality is prefer. If you have quality evry thing comes by own.Productivity is the next step of quality. In every field if u wanna prove something you have to show ur quality not quantity.Productivity is as important as quality but at higher level. It is basically depends upon the demand. At earlier stage demand is less so you give quality but as demand is increasing you give more prefrence to productivity rather than quality and its facts you take as many examples as u can see.

Madam,

As you quote, productivity depends upon quality. If quality of production is good, the over all efficiency and productivity naturally escalates.if quality is low/not optimum, then P..vity and efficiency will also descend

your comments pls.

In today's harsh business world, productivity without quality or quality without without productivity will soon see the business collapse. To me, there needs to be a fine balance between the two and enough tosatisfy the customer to make him keep on consuming the product.

If productivity is higher than quality, very soon, your customers will begin to see the relatively higher quality products of your competitors and will all soon move in that direction. On the other hand, if quality exceeds productivity, you will only be able to sell at a relatively higher price to a select few because of the relatively higher production cost.

We need a balance between the two as far as the customer's satisfaction reaches and to the extent of the threat of our competitors.

My dear it is not issue of Productivity or Quality it is the Question of Product is produced with quality itself. the reason is if your receipe work once after confirmity it must always work Right so there is no confusion if we can not take the Quality Production. We can better Impliment some sort of Systems because system always works if deviation are there with in the tolerence range where is problem. actually Productivity & Quality is always  not an issue the issue is Product must be Quality added. thats all.

Your question is a good one. There is a debatable impact of how each factor contributes to the supply chain as a whole. I look forward to the discussion. In some cases, such as reorganizing operational or manufacturing processes with cellular theory, one can achieve both increased productivity and quality. The important part to note however is resource allocation, which leads to your question.
Productivity ought to imply quality, otherwise there is no use churning out 1-ton chandeliers which cannot be hung from the ceiling,Quality must run through every aspect of the business, otherwise productivity is being impaired or is wasteful. Conversely non-productive processes must be flawed on quality. It means both are interrelated.

I would say productivity and quality on the past were seen as opposing factors on the business operating model, however thanks to the new Quality assurance approach it has changed.

Six Sigma and Lean projects have showed that the winning equation is when you put the quality to serve the productivity and the productivity to serve the quality;their should not be opposing forces they can help themselves to shift the business results.

It means  both play important role in organization.

They are symbiotic. You need both.
