Oh, yes! The Tata Nano will become as ubiquitous as the humble autorickshaw in India and across geographies. One of the first things that Tata Nano will metamorphosize in to is as a public service vehicle (small taxi) replacing the phat phaties etc. When the Tata guys launch a hybrid vehicle or EV version, the market will expand for its use as a public service taxi or personal transportation vehicle. Bajaj autorickshaw revolutionized public transportation in India, the next public transportation will come from Tata Nano. It is inevitable. (www.pharmaceuticalshealthcare.blogspot.com)

Nano is a known threat Auto Rikshaws.
AFAIK, I believe the Autorikshaw costs more than a nano, nearly about 2Lacs plus.
This is the only reason why Bajaj is planning for a similar car and put up a prototype during Auto Expo 2008.

Nano cannot replace a Auto Rickshaw - that is not the posisitoning from Tata as well from the core usage point of view an Auto is low on maintenace, easy to service across all the service garages throughout the country, better mileage and the overall cost of ownership is low. It is widely expected to make big inroads into the cab market just like what Tata Indica achieved replacing the Ambassadors over the long run.

Autos for a long time cannot be replaced. Nano is a fantastic car, but still it will only add to the traffic chaos in the country. And imagine with the spiralling prices of Petrol it will very difficult even if it is seen as a replacement to the autos. It would derail the dream of Mr. Ratan Tata of replacing a Car instead of a bike, will simply lose the charm of owning a CAR, if it were to replace the good old Autorikshaw.

First and foremost an auto is a three wheeler in public transport segment in the RTA list. Nano can be possibly made into a taxi but can never replace an auto even technically. IF and only if the TATA Motors management decides a s a policy to promote the Nano as a public transport then can a comparision be made on the replacement issue!! Also, Nano should not be promoted in this segment at all as the charm of the 'small' most affordable 'car' would lose its charm. Tata Motors would lose more money in the bargain as potential buyers would then ride the Nano Taxi rather than own one!

Agreed to the fact that Nano is a low cost vehicle that caters to small families, but considering the fact that it is still in its child phase with only 50000 nano's a year, it will take a very long time for it to be popular among masses.

No Auto's have their fair share in the society, and one can't replace all those auto's that are there in the country with Nano, Nano is made keeping in mind the Indian middle class people, and targetting especially the Two wheelers segment which is more in country, and with Nano being so cheap one will go for a car rather than a two wheeler, so in future one can see less number of two wheelers and more number cheap cars that are coming in the market from various car makers who are jumping on to this bandwagon of developing cheap and affordable cars for the Indian consumers.
