I support appearence with one question, if you can answer, you can understand your value. question is: Hope you all know about the 1st impression is the last impression & first 30 seconds denotes your 80% of selection result. Appearence means How do you wear, manage yourself, express yourself & sometimes it also includes your body language. So if you are bad in these, Can you force to an interviewer to continue your questions where you will explain your skills ?

appearance is very essential because as the saying goes "first impression creates a lasting impression". a person who comes unshaven, not properly dressed and does not conduct himself properly gives d idea of being casual and this is not wat any company wants. Skills are secondary, wats d use if a person is good in skills but not good in appearance.

Applicant appearance is must. According to my view, the applicant should be qualified to perform the job. The applicant should have employment goals. The applicant should be enthusiastic. The applicant should be prepared for the interview. The applicant should communicate the strengths. The applicant should sell him or herself.

Well said...Karthik...Ferrari has no use without fuel...but the Tatas are in collaboration with MIT to run cars on Water...so in future we may really not need fuel to run that beauty...What am saying is that you can always develop your skills in due course but its harder to change your appearance permanently even if you go for a cosmetic change...with side effects... Skills are important to the extent he/she can get the work done...but to upgrade your skills, even ppl. with bad appearance need to work towards it...in certain functional areas like, marketing &sales, if you have a good-looking m/f standing in front of you, you would certainly fall prey to their looks rather than look out for their skills...in some cases...but vice-versa, may not work at all...in most of the cases... A model can certainly make you buy a Ferrari without fuel in 5 secs, because you dont mind paying extra bucks for the fuel separately...for the model, in fact....but a commoner will still find it hard to sell that same commodity with fuel in it because you have an excuse of not having a deeper pocket to fetch that commodity...

Appearance does add a bonus to the hiring process......... but its not an all in all. The recruitee needs to be assessed every angle......lest, you may miss out on really worthy candidates.

Skills are not visible when you avail an opportunity to get hired by any organization however you do get noticed because of your appearance as the first thing that any one notices is ones presentable attitude so I would go for Appearance as knowledge/skills can be figured out in the course of interview or screening process. For a Fresher I would say Appearance is a must however for a Seasoned individual Appearance would complement the Skills.

You are primarily hired for your skills. But if you dress like a slob or a pig then you may not be wanted. You have to interact with society. There appearance, personal hiegiene, etc. matter

Skills alone or appearances alone cannot take one places...Even if one cracks the interview based on one's terrific skills would he/she be able to sustain in such a thriving and competitive environment where chances are that maximum people are judging u on ur looks!!Skills give you the edge in performance but decent looks gives one acceptability in the corporate world.

APPEARENCE IS BEST WAY TO JUDGE A CANDIDATE /APPLICANT AS YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR SELF SHOWS THE ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE . SAME WILL REFLECT YOUR WORK . SO YOU CAN NOT SEPERATE THE APPEARANCE FROM HIS WORK IN TOTALITY IT EFFECTS.

both appearance and skills are important.first impression matters a lot.its natural tendency of human being to perceive people by their outlook. But from the start of interview, when we start communicating, handling tasks, performing job,the most important thing is SKILL

First impression is always best impression...The way one present themselves, proves their confidence level and their commitment/attitude towards the work. Attitude is more important than skill set, without which one cannot survive in the long run...

Nice debate. Going by appearance is being very superficial. A person who takes a lot of care in getting dressed and in looking good is just superficial. It does not indicate anything about the person's skills. It just indicates that this person is very fashion conscious, that's all. A person must be presentable. According to me, "Presentable" means, the interviewee should have taken a bath, should be wearing clean & pressed clothes (regardless of fashion or cost), and if they can afford it, some nice body spray. That's all. There is no need to be overly fussy about appearance. Skills are really important. However, because of so many facetious and superficial people in many important positions, my suggestion to job seekers is that they should take some care with their appearance.

I support both of them. In one way, What SriRang said is correct. But, The skills are very important for the Applicant. If the person is having the Excellent Skills then automatically the HR who is going to hire will definitely impressed by his/her skills. Then, the apperance is not that much mandatory, it will develop once he/she is in.

Your appearance might get you just second look, but looks certainly cannot get any one a job. Job is given to the person sitting in front of you & not to his looks. In any case no one has any control over his/her appearance; which is God given Important thing is not looks but good personality & skills.

Skills are more important. But the way the applicant present himself is far more important. Coz that shows the attitude of the person towards the job. Absolutely not the beauty of the person

well, it always depends upon the nature of job profile to decide whether appearance is important or skill, but I feel both are not mutually exclusive since the appearance also to certain extent represent skill of the person. However in general appearance is passport for entry it is further the knowledge and skill or the internal personalilty of a person that makes much difference and is obviously more important. I can attribute 10% to appearance and 90% to knowledge & skill because it is knowledge X Skill that makes ability. Thanks.

Old adage says "You are welcome by your appearance and seen off by your knowledge" Words may differ, means same. While apperance is also required for certain jobs like receptionist, sales / marketing etc, other back end jobs, talent that is to be looked for 90%

Sitting still and wishing makes no person great. The good Lord sends the fishing, but you must dig the bait.Gold is of no value until it is worked and mined out on the ground.A man of words and not deeds is like a flower bed full of weeds.Hence skills ride over appearance.

It depends on the role for which you recruit. For Business promotional jobs such as Sales/Marketing a product or a Country manager of various operations, Hospitality jobs etc appearance does matters but, for field work or for hands-on-the -job , skills are valued rather than appearance. So the purpose for which the applicant is likely to be used does decide the preferance.

This question highly demands diplomatic answer. Skills is the basic requirement for you to be eligible for the position and the looks and professionalism takes you longer ie it gives you an added advantage. given two people with equal skills, anyone would normally prefer the good looking person.

I feel it depends on the kind of job the person is in. If a person is in IT or Finance field, he/she should give more value to Skill than apperance. On the other hand, if a person is into Marketing or Sales, he/she give the value first to apperance and then Skill. So I belive this go hand in hand, but its depends on the kind of job the person is in.

While I agree that skills, in the final analysis are far more important, appearence also is important. This question should be worded a bit differently. An employee who takes the trouble to appear well tells me that he has respect for what he does and takes it seriously.

According to me … Skill and appearance both have their own importance…. Based on the position we are hiring for… we should give importance …. for example if we are hiring for software development or technical or research or where logic is required then skill is most important than appearance… even though appearance plays a vital role but skill is most important for development/technical/research or logical job coz a person’s appearance can be developed if he/she has required skills .. for development/ technical etc position we can give second preference to appearance not to skill… Other side if we are hiring for sales or marketing or like that job then appearance is most important … when hiring for these jobs, we can give second preference to skill… by candidate’s appearance we can make out how is he/she organized and person is all about which is very important for sales or marketing kind of job…. After appearance we can give importance to skill for these kind of hiring…

My vote goes to "Skill are far more important", although appearance plays a major role in selection process but if a person is skilled he should requires a very little time to change his appearance, but at the same time unskilled requires much more time to be skill.i really agree that appearance would be your entry step but it is only skill who takes you higher and higher.
