I am neutral just to comment I am here.. It does not mean I am on this side.. :) A company stands tall with the good balance between all the sources not alone HR or sales.. We can't compare them..Can we.. One can't go long without another..

No doubt every dept is important and contributing. But the comparison here is between HR & Sales. To function effectively & successfully by all dept, what is necessary is the finance and revenue generation through sales & marketing. All employees in various dept need the salary to work with enthusiasm & motivation and the investors need their returns on their investments.

Cant narrow it down to one. No organisation can survive on any one department. All departments are equally important and play a vital role in an organisation.

Agree with Mr.Natteraja, first finance and then sales-marketing dept. is very important for an organaization as per priority. Because if you have finanace then, business can run or making an investment. Then sell products , revenue will generate. There are many possibilities of sales product, initially it many not need any HR..

The fact is all departments that are present has equql importance. Then in the '80's, 85% of the American corporate CEO's were Finance or Law professionals. So American corporations then gave more emphasize to Finance professionals though Law professionals were also given emphasize sideways because legal costs were exhorbitant for corporations and these in house lawyers saved them such expenses. Then it depends also on what sort of cultures the company creates for its own mission. American corporations are task oriented so they give more emphasize to Finance. In India more visibility now is on Infotech firms which are of role culture and so HR is predominant. Marketing is the 'club culture' more of OB in nature.

I would say Sales. Whether you are product oriented or service oriented , if you cannot sell your product or your service , you cannot remain in business ! All other departments , apart from Operations , are support departments. Operations and Sales are the backbone of an organization , unless the organization is a research organization , in which case the R & D department may also be a front-runner.
