I personally feel that Confidence, when coupled with the core competency required for the post, will surely steer you through the process of interview. Reference will only be catalyst in such a case to brighten up your chance. Reference in isolation may be no good even to interviewer and interviewee.

Mr. Joydeep a very good friend of mine on toostep.com. He takes initiative and calls me often on phone. But, I shall admit that I am poor in this area. Sorry Mr. Joy. Coming to the discussion, if the debate is Confidence Vs competence, the discussion would be more interesting. Mr. Joy said it right. But, my vote is for confidence. You may have the competence and talent, and if you dont have the confidence, you remain as an introvert. You require confidence to express your views. Confidence provides you the opportunity to prove yourself. Here comes your competence to prove what is you. You need an opportunity to prove your competence. Confidence will provide you that opportunity. So my bet is with Confidence.

Its obviously confidence because reference comes later once you have passed the initial stage. The very fact that you are attending the interview itself is the first confident step and thereon it keeps improving step by step when your talent, experience and knowledge are put to test. You need the confidence to see it through, the confidence to answer properly cos if you fumble you have lost that chance to impress never mind the strong references that you carry. You wont even proceed to the next stage. References come in handy for very senior profiles at the level of CEO and above where you will not be interviewed but the number of people recommending will be given weightage. All other below this need to have the confidence to face an interview with a CEO or a Director of an organisation.

Joydeep though I agree with your point of view but I am of the opinion that one should have vast knowledge regarding the position applied for and additional knowledge regarding the activities of operating procedure of any company. Having said that the confidence will always show up with the answers and that is what it requires to get through an interview.

Confidence sans Competence will have no meaning. Competence precedes confidence. With confidence, certainly, one can handle any redundant question at an interview. However, selection process centres around the competence level of the person to handle any situation in a work environment. Competence and Confidence, if they are coupled with Reference, one may reach a great height. References are required in the upper echelons, without which your candidature would be summarily rejected. Its totally dependent upon the situations. No single entity would favour any given situation. At time, you may require all the three, at times, only two and in no circumstances, confidence alone will only fetch you only minial jobs, not otherwise.
