Sales is the business after Marketing! You cannot keep the palm and take away the fingers and call it a HAND!! Marketing helps consumers make an INFORMED decision for buying. Buying a product or supporting a brand means business. Sales is an aftermath of communication which forms the basis of MARKETING! Its a HAND in GLOVE situation. Even if you have a product that is probably cheapest in its class or vertical, it also requires a function called product information that you leave behind to help your consumer make an informed decision. In this case the BROCHURE is your marketing tool which helps induce buying or "SELLING" of the product. You cannot separate these functions as independent aspects. they are extensions of conducting SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS!!

I feel for any Business positive commitment is important than any other. Sales and marketing are routine activities for in Business. IBM successfully completed it's 100 years in Business. But if you compare the fanfare of IBM with others... Google, Apple and Facebook get all the attention. But our everyday tasks of technology — saving a file on your PC, swiping your ATM card, credit card , scanning a grocery item in super market — that's all IBM. That is the IBM's Business commitment. IBM turns 100 without much fanfare. But its younger competitors owe a lot to Big Blue. Marketting creates the Hype and Fame but doesn't guarantee the existence and sustainability. After all, where would Google be without the mainframe computers?

Dear Vijaya Sorry to say you are turning both the concepts on their head. Sales is not a part of marketing but rather both ar inclusive and separate field by themselves. And nope danish has also got the definition of marketing wrong. It is not the designing of a product to sell itself. Nothing sells on its own. Can you place a product on the shop self and just advertise it and expect sales to happen in a category where technical aspects of the product has to be explained before the final decision is made ? Nope. Marketing is a tool that aids in the sales of a product. Like a product needs sales to push it through, it also needs marketing. In other words marketing can be defined as the tool for information dissemination in order to sell a product.

As Philip Kotler said marketing starts where sales end. So sales is impoortant than marketing to do business. We can put in such a way that "Sales in important to do business and Marketing in important to increase business"

Marketing is more important because it senses the pulse of environment around and makes the product accordingly, creates value and then comes the role of sales where it just have to push the product into environment. If you have a bad sales guy with good product it could work, but a good sales guy with a irrelavent product cannot do anything in the market. Why will any one buy a product? only if he feels a need for it and has sufficient financial capability to create demand, when the company say does not know what people what will it do by producing products which does not sell in the market or which are not necessary. Any way we cannot relate the same ideology to every market, when it comes to B2B Marketing is important and when it comes to B2C markets sales takes a forward step.

Marketing is an activity or tool that is needed to push product towards sales. And the slower the sales the higher the marketing effort is simple principle. However, if a product can create market and remain in demand without marketing obviously Sales remains the activity.

Definitely we need a market to sell a product what we have.Market value of a product increases only if there is a demand. Demand comes of quality and customer satisfaction. Satisfaction accomplished only by the way how the sales person approach the customer. So customer comes to know about the product when its popular in market. Everything is interrelated. We cant relay on one thing for its success. As said before sales and market both we need. I dont have that much knowledge in Sales and Marketing. Just I have submitted my views in front of you. As Danish said 'sales' is a part of marketing. Sales is the final process where the goods and services exchange hands from the manufacturer to customers. Marketing is a concept where a product is designed in such a way that it gets sold by itself. So I feel businesses should concentrate more on Marketing.

sales is part of the whole marketing process which aims to create brand equity. marketing is very important in todays competitive environment to have strategic advantage. marketing segments the target customer group according to their needs while sales process is exchange of right product with right group of customers.

I think that question is totally baseless because whats point of comparing both where sales is meant for just make a exchange BUT marketing is from Where to start & where is end. no clue. Sales is possible only if you have something to sale but marketing is possible as it includes planning ( Strategic planning) like as What do you sale ?, where ? to whom ? How ? and many others ???? WHAT DO YOU SAY ???

Marketing identifies opportunity for a product, develop the product, packaging, organises advertisement, fixes the price and the last activity to take the product to the consumer is sales.

I agree with natteraja on the subject. Sales is a small part of Marketing. Hence Marketing is required and two decades ago Sales used to play the part since marketing was not required and it was in its infancy.

without Marketing, Sales cannot happen, even to sell a product which is not known to the prospect, we need to show brochures, documentation etc,,, which is again Marketing... so first marketing and then sales. However Sales being the only function which generates revenues its importance cannot be neglected...

Marketing is the first step of sales. To make a product sale able proper marketing concepts should be implemented. Most cases you can find that every steps from the root level to top level are coming under marketing and when steps regarded in monetary/quantity terms, then the sales concept arises.

Marketing is the best tool for any business. If you will do marketing properly and strategically, sales will autimatically boos. To launch any new product or brand, first we are generating awareness , we are not doing sale. When we are going to sale any product in market, first we are giving normally introduction and explain abt. company and brand, its features. If consumers feel like then , he will buy.

"Sales" is the ultimate goal of the marketing but marketing is not selling all the time. because as much as the marketers are consumer centric more they will able to sell their products. Because marketing starts with the idea of the product and its final sale.

A business can be considered as a value chain starting from design, procurement, manufacturing, distributing and marketing. Distributing is selling along with logistics design. This selling or distributing helps in making the product available to the consumer at the time he needs the product the 'period' and 'place' factor of 4 p's tactics of marketing or product, price, place and period.

No doubt, sales is part of marketing. However to create/generate sales marketing is very vital. Moreover products with technical nature requires marketing to make the customers to understand its product's features, specifications, and applications with special reference to the differentiation from the competitors.Further certain products which are in daily use need not have much more marketing efforts and they will be sold automatically by the respective dealers where the sales & collection becomes important. Other products with technical natures require to create brand building, demand generation, product acceptance etc which involves all development work that becomes the marketing job. Thanks for the referral Mr.jayant Vishnu Ji.

Marketing means the activity of assessing the needs of the various segments of the market, carrying out market research if the needs of the market are being met by the competitors, their market share, untapped market, unsatisfied pocket of markets with the existing brands then coming out with a product/products that can fulfill the needs of the various segments of the market based on different criteria like price, region, etc. So marketing is a comprehensive activity unlike sales.

Now a days everything revolves around marketing.Companies can sell only when they can give required visibility to the products. In fierce competition for any company customer retention has become more important than selling.Marketing would not help sales but as well help in bringing back the customer or what we call customer loyalty.
