I think, both are required at different times. Intellectuality for expansion and growth in business and diplomacy to get the work done.

Diplomatic, I would say 1. Thru Intellect one can hone in a lot of skills. But being diplomatic needs a lot of patience which is inborn trait. 2. While I have met many an intellectual person who have had “Emperor” sized ego, most successful diplomatic person I have met have maintained a balance ego. Normally one would find intellectual persons to have inflated egos. Balanced Ego is very essential because one of the most important and vital skills for a successful businessman is “negotiation skills”. And an inflated EGO kills a good negotiater. It also puts a screen (Purdha) on the other requirements like vision, goals, etc. 3. A good diplomat and a negotiator would also see things from the other person’s perspective. This is very important to close deals and manage people. 4. A good diplomat would sympathies and empathies and whenever required would slightly bend the rule book. This is very rare in an intellectual personality, who would only go by what is strictly the rule and facts and thus people would find it very difficult to deal / handle him.

To be a renowned businessman, we need to be diplomatic and also intellectually strong. Diplomacy helps us to win today's war but intellectualism helps us to survive future wars and ensures our survival for the long term. Diplomacy without intellectualism or vice-versa does not guarantee a person will not become a renowned businessman but it increases the probability of becoming a renowned businessman. Additionally, apart from these factors, many other factors like risk taking ability, etc. are also involved for a person becoming a renowned businessman.

To be sucessful one should be diplomatic. Take the case of one of the most sucessful business magnet Mr Mukesh Ambani. He runs such mamoth organisations with diplomatic skills on top of everything.

Good debate , but I have a doubt over the interpretation of the word 'Businessman'. are we referring to the prople having some business or are we talking about industrialists too? These too categories have too different traits for success. For example 'quality of raising money to set up an industry' is a big attribute of an industrialist which is not necessary for a businessman. Again the word 'Renowned' creates some confusion - some kind of group-politicing, capability of black-money laundering and and application of diplomacy can make a person a 'celebrity' businessman - but I am not sure whether the proposer of this debate wants to set a target for this kind of business :D Power of applying diplomacy on right time in rights place is an expression of intellect only. Not being aware of the quality of the product or being negligent to the customer's actual requirement and covering this up with some tricky skill do not help any business in long term I guess. and that way there is not conflict between 'diplomacy' and 'intellect'.

Without intellect diplomacy won't work. You have to be intellectual to be diplomat. By intecllectual I don't mean person who is a book worm, or who has done PhD in any field. By intellectual we mean a person who uses his brain to good effect. To achieve his goals he can be diplomatic at times but only after using his intellect. So in my view intellect comes first than diplomacy.
