I think Web Applications have overrule the concept of having a softwares, especially when we talk abt inhouse solutions, and so is the demand of custom applications and web applications.

Looking at the demand - application developer has to acquire more skills in languages and latest technologies to cater to the clients requirements and is more creative rather than being intense hardcore expertise.
